Bob Costas throws shade on ESPN for putting few NBA games on ABC while saying MJ > LeBron

Is he right?

That's assuming that the NBA would be able to replicate even close to the popularity of the NFL, which just isn't the case. Mainly because of the number of games that the NBA has, which dilutes the product and makes it less attractive to the masses especially when you factor in load management and how networks themselves don't even know what will be starting lineup before the games start.

The NBA and its own players don't even take the product serious, so how can you expect fans to do the same as well.

:what:
Everything that is broadcast on network and cable gets higher ratings on network TV. Football, basketball, soccer, baseball, everything. That's why we still get reports of a certain rating being high "for cable".

Like, we just had the final four on cable. Final four is alternating years where it comes on CBS and TNT and the CBS years are always higher.

Peter Gabriel before Lakers-Pistons :wow:

What a time.

It is sad that Disney with all of its resources can’t tell stories before games

CBS was also very good with that.

They only have the NBA to fill air time and keep it from the other networks. They put no effort in producing a good product. I would love for Turner or the big three networks to take it over.

ESPN has a lot of buffoons talking about the league too. Discourse about the NBA in general is terrible but ESPN sets the tone. So many people are Klutch shills too.

Another issue in basketball coverage is how much advanced stats have taken over the narrative of players instead of artistry and what we're seeing on the court. When MJ was playing, nobody was talking about his PER, win shares, VORP, box plus/minus, effective shooting percentage, etc. It was about his dominance and awesome things he did on the court.

You know what's great about football coverage? Besides PFF crap, it's pretty meat and potatoes. The only "advanced" stat you really hear about is QB rating, which nobody really understands but everyone knows higher is better. Besides that, you aren't hearing a bunch of random numbers being thrown around about Tom Brady's performance.

When Derrick Henry has 200 yards rushing and 3 TDs, that's what the discussion is about. Not some dikkhead saying, "well, according to the analytics, David Montgomery has a better PER and would perform even better than Henry on the Titans" or "David Montgomery is the more impactful/valuable running back because of his win shares."

Regular people don't want to hear all that shyt. KISS: keep it simple, stupid.

Again I ask, what night outside of weekends would you put NBA games on for ABC? Realistically. There’s a reason why sports games aren’t shown network television during the week for the most part outside of special occasions. Don't forget even the great NFL just flopped with TNF on network television even with how big their brand is.

People just don't care about sports like that on network television during the week outside of big events these days.

How can you guarantee an outcome on a hypothetical scenario? :what:

Because the sports and television isn’t the same now as it was back then. People don’t fukk with sports for the most part now during the weekends like they used to outside of major events. Even the NFL learned that lesson when TNF flopped on network TV.

Once again, I will ask the question of where exactly on the schedule would you put those games full time outside the weekends? It being on during the weekdays isn’t going to change that.

this may be the stupidest statement I have ever read on this forum.

You say that, but overlook the fact that the NFL failed on Thursday nights when they were on network television. There was a reason why Amazon was able to swoop in and get it as other networks wanted no part of bidding and paying their asking price.

Again, I’m speaking strictly towards network television, which is the premise of this thread.

I agree, the NBA needs to have a shorter season so that the games mean more

a shorter season could help players get injured less too

on an unrelated note the NBA needs to get rid of the play-in tournament and just go back to the traditional playoff format

If I’m ESPN or any other outlet, I’m Silver what is their actual plan to combat load management as I’m not trying to pay billions of dollars for a half-azzed product which is what the league is now.. It’s why Silver is acknowledging load management and trying to come up with a solution as even he knows it could potentially mess with future bread.

They don't need a weeknight time slot. I didn't say anything about a weeknight slot. NBA on NBC did not do weeknights for regular season games.

So do you think the reason they're doing play-in tournaments for the playoffs is because Adam Silver is trying to make more money or save money ?

How do you feel about the play-in tournament vs the traditional format breh ?

ESPN is already doing games on ABC on the weekends. Y’all do that ESPN/ABC owns other sports that they have to make time for outside of the NBA. It’s not like they’re showing reruns all weekend and are in need of content :mjlol:
