I've heard people compare Boldy to Prodigy before, and definitely you can hear it in the voice. And Alchemist says their personalities are similar too.I can’t lie I was ready to hate on Jay....but I can’t
Boldy that nikka right now![]()
This Versace dude came out of nowhere, and nothing about his sound warrants him working with a dude that just dropped an album of the year contender. I heard a "beat" by Jay Versace called Versace Church Van (link below) with Mach-Hommy and it's one of the most unlistenable songs I've ever heard.
Why is the hip-hop game about to make this dude Jay Versace happen?I mean I guess get your paper, kid. I ain't mad at Jay per say, but he's not dope to me. At all.
Versace Church Van
I'm legit blown away that you started your post the way you did and closed it with not being annoyed at Church Van. I guess yeah, I'm like you. I'd be fine with it as an interlude beat, but rapping over that for an entire song is fukking irritating as hell. I couldn't even finish the song.![]()
A whole project with no drums ain't it. Jay is gonna have to work on that. There's some nice loops but currently he's a niche producer who would be better served doing a track or two and not a whole project.
The loop for Versace Church Van doesn't sound bad at all to me it's just that it's more of something that should be used as an intro/interlude. They chose to rap over it![]()

If someone is gonna do a loop with no drums, it's gotta be a fire loop. It's gotta be like Daytona 500, Palmolive, Hoard 90, or something like that. Some of these upcoming sample-based producers are looping anything and everything they come across.

It sounds like such a Knxledge beat to me. Might be my favorite song on here.Brick Van Exel though![]()
You understand exactly what the fukk I mean. I thought Tea in China had it perfect. The only drumless loops were all really dope. And they were placed well in the sequencing. One opened the album (Carruth, which is one of the coldest intros in a long time) and one closed the album (Phone Bill.) Then the most introspective and mellow one (Great October) was in the middle to vibe out to. Everything else was hard hitting. It's gotta be a loop so good drums would ruin it. Most of Jay's loops need drums.
I agree with the boldedshyt is dope so far.
The drumless beats don't bother me

Drumless loops are supposed to add variety and make an album more dynamic. RZA was an absolute master at this in Wu-Tang's prime. And I've always hated the idea of making an entire project out of them, because it kills the entire premise of what makes the style dope.
Alchemist was on too heavy on it for a minute in the 2010's but thankfully he got back to basics. Madlib can be a little heavy on them too, but his shyt is so groovy that I don't care. Roc Marci and Ka are the only ones that can get away with doing entire drumless loop projects IMO.
Didn't finish yet but that one track I heard with drums and the sequence was terribleThis nikka Jay Versace hates drums
No doubt. I'm taking in circles at this point but one last thing regarding the bolded.Roc and Ka put so much emphasis on bars going drumless helps the words stand out. Boldy has that lazy flow and monotone delivery so some drums livens things up for him.
You're right about the sequencing. It's a great way to bring you in, calm things down, and close the project.
Going 100% drumless is better for a concept project like Jay Electronica's Eternal Sunshine.
I feel you he definitely know how to set the mood he make you feel like you on the block with him while he rapsI've heard people compare Boldy to Prodigy before, and definitely you can hear it in the voice. And Alchemist says their personalities are similar too.
But one thing I don't hear is that P was the king of dropping those simple but forceful, hard-hitting opening bars (@mobbinfms ). See the opening bars of Sook Ones, Survival, Hell on Earth, Keep It Thoro, Quiet Storm, the list goes on and on.
Boldy has a lot of similar style cold ass opening bars.
- I used to get confused, choosing my battles wisely...
- Well spoken on some dudes that been jail broken...
- We come through like Green Beret Marines...
- The more you sweat in training, the less you bleed in combat...
- I was young and ill advised...
- Better have my money by Monday, been a month of Sunday's...
- I'm on a road not taken so it's less traveled...
Not necessarily lyrical/miracle shyt, but simple and strong.
