I’ve never seen so many HBCU games or coverage on tv since I was a kid and broadcasters have to pay for those rights.

Putting exposure in quotes makes it seem like it isn’t a valuable thing. If it wasn’t the advertising would not exist.
they’ve been putting hbcu games on tv for years so this isn’t true

You just never paid attention to them but that’s a you thing

We made posts about them in real time.
Pepsi just renewed their SWAC deal last week.
Here is thread about when it was first signed

SWAC broadcast deal signed while national spotlight was on HBCU sports because of Deion

SWAC commissioner Dr. Charles McClelland speaking about the effect on 60 minutes

When you consider the timing…just after/during the summer of 2020. With all the corporations/organizations repeating that ‘racial reckoning’ phrase. Most of the additional spotlight, support, and avenues were do to that.

Not saying Dieon had zero impact, but his arrival and effect on JSU/HBCUs coincided with a bigger movement.

No it didn't.
HBCUs usually have talent and get big in waves, you get attention, it recedes, and then it gets attention again.
Deion got attention for himself, not for HBCUs. Ed Reed wanted attention for himself, not HBCUs.

Bruh, I’ve seen folks on here say his impact was felt on admissions HBCU wide, which is patently false since applications to HBCUs were trending upwards since 2019 but 2020 was historic. Applications gets misconstrued with actual student body population sizes. Hell, Howard reported almost a 2k drop in student body size from 2022 to 2023. Same with Alcorn St and across HBCU Land. They all do a shyt job of tracking and reporting actual application numbers tho

Besides Bill Simmons and LeBatard, what other media personalities have built their own ‘network’?

(Using “built” loosely. LeBatard actually built a solid core of personalities around him and was then able to get DraftKings to put some money behind it.

I don’t listen/follow Simmons as much, not sure if he built it organically and the money came in…or some corporation just gave him a deal and money to start building the The Ringer/Grantland)
Bit of an aside but The Ringer is so much worse than Grantland it's ridiculous. Anything The Ringer produces that is good is purely by accident.

Negativity (Kayfabe)
Bo dealing w/ wha alot of those who "came of age & found they voice" on Twitter finding out in recent times: When you decide to operate in a vacuum & only allow in that with which you agree with its easy to be the brightest bulb in the room. But that inability the deal w/ others that don't agree yet still be engaging is where longevity lies.
There's a certain audacity in being "right", it creates blinders, but how do you move when u "right" but the mfers who are wrong have enough power to make their wrongs right?

:ohhh:

I stopped listening to Bo a minute ago--he started sounding like a writer for The Root

But, I'll give him credit for trying to dialogue with Will Cain back when he was with ESPN and got flamed for his Kaepernick take

But, you're right; at some point your smugness gets annoying when you do a fukking sports show

I smell a Bomani Jones/LeBatard reunion.
Bo would be a sucka to do that.

He's made enough money to do a YouTube show with a higher production value and built himself up to get a sponsor/support from a bigger entitiy.

I'll take the word of the SWAC commissioner.

I’m Bomani’s case, he’s said multiple times he’s not really of that cloth. And recognizes that even with ESPN, he only says but o so much on ‘Black’ issues.

Bomani’s issue with Dieon was not that Dieon should be ‘Black, Black, Black’…..but don’t preach that type of rhetoric if you’re not in it for the long haul and willing to take licks.

Seems like Bomani doesn’t like when current sports figures (Lebron, Dieon) try to make it seem like they’re in the same ilk as former black sports figures (Ali, Russell, Kareem, John Thompson) that were more engaged in moving the needle. Which make sense when he specifically goes out of his way to say he’s not of that ilk/heart either.
Which is exactly why he should go take a job a resurrect the journalism program at an HBCU …I mean he seemed ok viewing himself as the gatekeeper of “authentic black rhetoric” when he was on these platforms popping p*ssy over JSU …this would be the perfect opportunity to showcase that he wasn’t just another clout demon looking to make some waves off another nikkas name and actually cares deeply about those black students like he comported himself during his media rounds at that time … :manny: makes sense to me

I think the podcasts stink as well.

I respect what they've built over there, but I'm inclined to agree.

Which is crazy, because I was a faithful Grantland reader. It just seems like once they got established, The Ringer articles leaned REALLY hard into their house style being "Article written by chronically online author."

The podcasts aren't as bad as the written content to me, but none of their subjects or personalities have made their podcasts things I want to listen to for a while.

But the folks that like their podcasts seem to absolutely love them, so Im fine with accepting that this is more of a me thing.
