I respect what they've built over there, but I'm inclined to agree.

Which is crazy, because I was a faithful Grantland reader. It just seems like once they got established, The Ringer articles leaned REALLY hard into their house style being "Article written by chronically online author."

The podcasts aren't as bad as the written content to me, but none of their subjects or personalities have made their podcasts things I want to listen to for a while.

But the folks that like their podcasts seem to absolutely love them, so Im fine with accepting that this is more of a me thing.
I remember when Simmons was starting The Ringer and he said then that longform articles are out of style and he wants articles that are short enough that they can be read while on the toilet. And how readers have shorter attention spans so he wanted basically quantity over quality and it definitely shows. Plus he didn't have as much money to play with so he hired a lot of young inexperienced writers. I agree on the podcasts too.

I stopped listening to Bo a minute ago--he started sounding like a writer for The Root

But, I'll give him credit for trying to dialogue with Will Cain back when he was with ESPN and got flamed for his Kaepernick take

But, you're right; at some point your smugness gets annoying when you do a fukking sports show

Bo would be a sucka to do that.

He's made enough money to do a YouTube show with a higher production value and built himself up to get a sponsor/support from a bigger entitiy.
Lol, don't nobody wanna sponsor a shea butter sports program done by a person who hates sports..

Best bet he has outside of my previous suggestion is to try to get on vivica fox's fox soul show to shyt on straight black men and talk around sports to women for a pat on the head.

That's pretty much LeBatard's whole business model...
Nah Dan loves sports especially Miami sports, he just doesn't moralize and take it seriously

There is a difference.

Bomani doesn't like sports, it's just a means to an end for him.

Well I was speaking towards the work he's been doing with Howard Bryant and all the white dykes he's hiring at Meadowlark. Stuff like this is right up Bomani's alley

I agree Dan is a liberal and brings in a promotes trash like Sarah "auction whore herself for super bowl tickets" Spain and Katie "flirts with execs to get hired while a bartender" Nolan and folks like bomani because he thinks he is being subversive.

Chad Milman basically built the Action Network as the Chief Content Officer even though Patrick Keane is the CEO.
Colin Cowherd founded The Volume.

There's room to start your own company if you have enough of a base.

Bill was in a space where he basically built Grantland so he kinda knew what to do when it came to building The Ringer and already had a few people in place to start it with him.

There's a pretty good podcast out there called "How I built it" with Bill Simmons as a guest talking about how he started the ringer

Honestly I don't even think they care that much about articles at all especially since the Spotify purchase.

When I got hired at the Ringer, they basically said we're just hiring you for podcasts meanwhile Action Network had me writing all the time and ESPN and another platform actually wanted to hire me to write in addition to other media I was doing.

ESPN actually offered me an opportunity to write while I was still at the Ringer but I knew there was no way that was going to happen so I didn't even bring it to my bosses.

he did an evening jones episode

basically said people don't know shyt as far as speculation goes and he has money stacked so he'll bring his sports podcast back whenever he wants to.

he also made it sound like he's done being an "employee" for a network/corporation and is more interested in working on projects without being tied down to one place long term.

I just joined the Ringer last year. I've posted my stuff around here.

I think HBO had a piece of it......but yeah I think things are a lot different after the Spotify sale.
Got it. Do you know around how much people like Jacoby, Jay Williams, Jalen Rose, etc were making at ESPN?

Bomani was definitely making 7 figures a yr, 1-2 million at least, I have to assume Jalen Rose was making more. he was on more stuff, the face of their NBA coverage.

Jacoby probably made quite a bit less, Jay Williams probably made around the same as Bomani at least.

Do you work in the industry or have they hinted at those salaries before?

I don't work in the industry, I just follow this shyt closely.

you could tell that Bomani was paid by where he was living in Miami and in NYC, plus it has been reported by one of the sites that covers the sports media people before.

that was just from ESPN too, with whatever HBO was paying him. I'm sure he was doing really nice the past couple years.
