Depends some of it sounds dated some of it doesn't :manny:

I'm 20 and I can listen to every A Tribe Called Quest album front to back and lova that shxt, then I listen to AmeriKKKas moste wanted and those beats are beyond :flabbynsick::trash:

Pretty much everything after 94 I can listen too except Mobb Deep, them nikkas make some depressing ass music :deadmanny:

A lot of my fav rappers are from the 90's anyway like, Hova, Nas, Pac, Snoop, B.I.G. DMX, ATCQ, Wu-Tang :myman:

I'd rather listen to a dope beat with a garbage rapper than the other way around

80s sound is VERY outdadted, the 90s not so much IMO, I can jam most of the classics of back then and rap was indeed better than now :manny:

how can lyrics be dated???

beats can easily be dated...but outside of talkin about clothing brands that dont exist anymore how can lyrics be dated???

Like when the camel say I bone chicks that favors Idalis...A younger person not around during that MTV period, when her or Rachel from BET were fantasy girls for most guys, would probably be like :whoo:

However, KDot mentions Baywatch in Swimming Pools hook, so you may have a point :youngsabo:

@Danie84 I think you should change the age to under 25 because majority of late 80's babies got into Hip Hop hardbody during the mid 90's.

Lyrics can be dated in that some shyt that sounded ill in the 1980s doesn't sound ill to us now after being exposed to advanced production and better emcees. I remember originally listening to the old school stuff just out of principal as a teenager and like Harry said, a lot of that shyt had to be an acquired taste.

As far as the 1990s go, production circa 96-97 onward is good, but some of the older stuff does sound very basic now or plain. They're time capsules for that era but as hip-hop progressed sonically, they do sound dated. But it depends on the album, some super-producers were just nice with it regardless. At the same time, some shyt from the late 1990s sounds wack now too. Like half of that Swizz Beats shyt from that era. Those Casio keyboard beats

But the OP should be asking this question to people born in like 1993 and later.

I'm 26 and most of the classics from the 90's will never be matched quality-wise these days. Even the albums I consider 5 mics from these days are nowhere near Ready to Die, Illmatic, Reasonable Doubt, etc...

How are the 90s beats dated, everything from 94 on is pretty modern. Ready to Die, The Infamous don't sound dated to me. In the West you had the Chronic and Doggystyle those albums were ahead of their time IMO. I like the jazzy feel of the early 90s (ATCQ).

IMO the 80s beats are SO bad. I was listening to Criminally Minded, terrible beats.

Yea thats what I was thinking. People who were born in the 80's (whether it was early or late) spent majority of their childhood, adolescent years in the 90's. For example, I was born in 78, but can tell you what was popping in the 80's (for the most part)
