I think it is simply rude for people to ask others to help them with a home improvement project and not offer any money. That goes for friends & family.
Friendship doesn't guarantee that people gonna say yes to every favor asked. Friends gonna accept no or maybe another time. Sometimes, a,friend may not get back to you in a timely manner. Gotta be flexible with friends.

anyway, everybody needs boundaries. he could have said it in a more tactful way, but opposite sex friends do need to be aware of significant others and the spaces typically occupied by them. women also need to be aware of what they are asking men to do. some things you really need to have enough sense to not be asking for, like things that are expensive or labor intensive. some things he really should only be doing for his lady.

You're spot on. Everytime I've helped with "labor" work with family they would usually break us off a little bread and/or feed us. And I would do the same if I was to ask my family or friends for labor work.
People on here actually argued with me saying men and women can have platonic relationships.

The real issue I see with most of you is you don't actually want female friends. Just like you shouldn't have to say black baseball player. You shouldn't even have to say female friend. You should be treating her just like you treat your nikkas cause she's your friend. Do you ask your day ones "What am I getting out of this?" Do they have to offer you money anytime they ask a favor? That's a lot of words for you to still be wrong.... Whether you like it or not when people are in a relationship there are roles around the house. if she has a man he has responsibilities and she has some on her end. Housework is something that you are going to expect your partner to be apart of..
So with that it's absolutely the right question to ask. You don't want to be stepping into another man's role. Now you say well she doesn't have a man.. so what.. the question should be asked and if they aren't close enough to even know whether they have S.O.'s or not then again painting is also not a task for an acquaintance.
