Most of the naysayers don't. Before I had mine I swore I wouldn't and I didn't. Then I saw where that was going.
I work with the youth and everyday I see the effect of those parents who let their kids run em over at 3,4,5 and now those kids are 8 and 9 and the momma is desperate hoping I can "do something with" him/her.

Beating doesn't change a child's behavior. I have plenty of friends who got their butts whipped by moms AND pops, but they still did dumb things or have criminal records, myself included, sans the record.
I agree same situation. Beating shouldn't be an option and physical discipline should be the last option. The key here is that fathers need to be creative in meting out discipline, And it should be done in a way that prepares the child for everything out in the world.
I always think about the situation in this video when it comes to my daughters. Especially when mouthing off is the biggest issue that we have. It's better for me to teach them to learn to shut their mouth and walk away rather than get out in the "real world" and get taught this way.
The cop was still wrong here. But it could have been avoided by the girl also.

I have boys. My oldest(8), be getting out of line so I have to put these paws on him. I'm short(5'0), and my son is basically my height, so I feel that causes him to test the boundaries a little more than normal. A swift rib shot has him thinking twice though His father is one of those "He's a boy, thats what boys do", when he gets in trouble
