You probably don’t understand basketball as well as you may think you do. Or you’re too young to have watched any of his games; but he has a lot of legendary games that still get burn on NBATV and ESPN classic games and the such. So I’m not sure what it is, but Isiah is by far an all time great, and someone who actively sacrificed personal greatness in order to win titles.
You know he the truth when even all the old heads that hated him still talk about how great he was. I think he's one of the biggest losers in the stats above all era. Isiah had the ability to score more but took a step back for the good of the team and ran the show and made sure everybody got touches. One of the best leaders in NBA history. Stats with him don't tell the whole story.

This might be blasphemy but it's hard for me to see the all time greatness of Isiah Thomas.

That's just me. There have been so many guards over the years that in my mind, loom larger.
Zeke was a bad inbounds pass and a bad call in game 6 of the finals from making 4 straight finals, winning 3 straight ships and 2 FMVPs. Put some respek on his name

As far as the Magic/Bird thing:

Bird stopped winning fairly early and had his career marred with his back injury. Magic had a more conventional prime/peak, 2 extra rings and a Finals carryjob at the end to ice the cake.
What do you mean bird stopped winning fairly early? His last title eas 86, then back in the finals in 87, ECF in 88 and missed basically all of 89 due to his back. Then he was 32 with a shot back

I can see Magic being better, but I disagree with Magic being on a different tier than Larry.

The perception gap between them that has formed post careers is fascinating.

Agreed. Larry's back shortening how long he was at his peak.

Dirk belongs on a tier up from the last one. I don't see Jokic/KD as being a whole tier above Dirk.

I’m swapping Wade and KD.

Wade proved that he can be the man to lead a squad to a ring . KD has the better overall skill set but he’s obviously missing something intangible that made him have to go to GSW and form the avengers to actually win

And at this point I’m not sure what’s keeping Wilt a tier above Hakeem and Jokic
Agreed. Not sure how KD gets to weasel his way to top tier anything and never carried team to a championship by himself. Elite skillset as a scorer that's about it. Wade got him in almost every other category in basketball aside from pure scoring

How important is winning a championship? I mean you have players that have skill and right there with these greats but they don’t have the championships? As good as Bird was in the 80s you gotta mention Dominique.
Those Hawks teams was good they just couldn’t beat the Celtics though. Does that take away from Dominique as a player?:jbhmm:

The Top 10 case stops with these guys as we sit here right now in 2025...

I have Kobe in my Top 10 but I'd entertain an argument for any of the guys under him, to be over him, because he doesn't have an impenetrable Top 10 case...

Aaannnnnnnnddddddd.....a lot of people didn't, and still don't. Whats hilarious is you nikkas who claim to be basketball fans, act as if The Coli is the first and only place you've heard Kobe's historic placement debated. It's been a thing for years, he's always been a guy where a bunch of people ranked him super high, and a bunch of people didn't. Very little "middle ground/middle class" opinions on Kobe...

Either you have him dumb high or you have him fringe or outside the Top 10. These conversations about him didn't start on The Coli...

  1. Lebron James
  2. Michael Jordan
  3. Wilt Chamberlain
  4. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar
  5. Magic Johnson
  6. Larry Bird
  7. Bill Russell
  8. Tim Duncan
  9. Stephen Curry
  10. Shaquille O’Neal

At least Murk has Kobe in the top 10. He should be ahead of Shaq and Curry on any list. You can argue he's better than Bird and Duncan too. I didn't see Russell, Wilt or Kareem, so it's hard to say who's better unless you just look at accomplishments and stats. But that don't tell the entire story. Kobe's one of the 3 best players I've ever seen and I've been watching since '87:flabbynsick:

There's no way you can definitively place him above Shaq. Shaq had a higher peak, Shaq won more championships as a #1, and Kobe was Shaq's #2...

There's no way you can definitively place him over Duncan. Duncan's peak was in line with Kobe, Duncan won more championships as a #1. There was a stretch from 1998-99 thru 2003-04 where it was Duncan and Shaq as the best player in basketball. By the time Kobe ascended into that conversation in '05, he was doing shyt that neither Shaq or Duncan did at their apex---->missing the playoffs and losing in the first round...

I'm okay with any arrangement of Kobe, Shaq, and Duncan, they're interchangeable and I go back and forth on how I rank them myself. I lean Duncan ahead of both because Kobe and Shaq had each other, but if someone puts one of them a slot over Duncan, it's not the craziest thing...

It's at least a conversation with Steph, too. Steph peaked higher than Kobe and was the second best player if his era. Hakeem peaked higher than Kobe and was the second best player of his era. Both of those guys have various career accomplishments that can be argued push them ahead of Kobe...

The list is acutally not bad. We debate all we want but EVERY player who deserves top 10 CAN'T be top 10 and it's no consensus for the most part. Mike Bron Cap Magic Tim Kobe Shaq WIlt Bird and Russell means my list is missing cats like Dream Steph Jerry Moses Julius Oscar Joker KD etc. ANY of those 8 could have an argument and a legit one as being top 10 ever especially the first two. So we gotta stop taking these lists serious and just look at them as the subjective opinion that they are.
