The South took a lot of heat for hip hop going down the drain and they deserved it all :pachaha:

Yall was so resentful to the East Coast for playing yall back in the day that yall banded together and supported every single artist, even the ones yall knew were wack as fukk. Everybody around the country rocks with 2 Chainz, Future, Quan, Jeezy, Tip, Luda, Ross and Wayne but, yall was letting nikkas like OJ the Juiceman, Soulja Boy and G4Boys come through the gate too and would be dead serious saying they were hot :beli:

Nah, if 93 was anything, it was the end of socially conscious rap like Public Enemy and more hardcore shyt like Onyx. Once that black power message was taken away, corporate heads took over and gradually diminish lyrical skill ever since. Until now with the new era where you HAVE to be skilled to have a shot of lasting for more than one year.

:what: @ the bolded.

lyricism peaked AFTER '93.

AGAIN, LYRICISM NEVER WENT ANYWHERE. so I don't cosign the thread.

but, one thing I will say is that the mainstream media is acting as if "lyricism is back" and it looks as if that's the new message that theyre going to drill into people's heads for the next 2 years.

lyrical heads like who

Cole
K Dot
KRIT

20 somethings that are dropping heat left and right that get exposure in the mainstream. Even 2 Chainz flopped hard this year. That non lyrical shyt has been dead for a good while now.

:usure: There are a few gems like Illmatic and Ready to Die that dropped post 93, but do any album has the cultural impact of Paid in Full in terms of lyricism?

ready to die isn't even very lyrical.

"paid in full" was about more than just lyrics. it was an all-around musical masterpiece.

:lupe: waits on Big stans.

Lyricism is gradually getting back its original form. There are still people here that think that the 808s still sell.

lyricism never went anywhere.

that's my gripe with this thread.

hes right with the numbers tho. I just don't agree with what he said concerning 2013.

it officially began in '73. monumental changes stemming from '83 & '93. and then a drastic change for the worst began in '03.

I just don't like this misconception that lyricism is making a comeback, when it never left.

fukk out of here this era is wack. 90% of rappers have dissapointed on their sophomore release.

Lyricism is a little better but hip hop is stagnant right now

Who are these lyrical rappers you all speak of (not counting people like Nas etc... that have been around a long time)?

we're supposed to act like Kendrick is a legendary lyricist.

and we're supposed to act like j.cole is nice.

and allegedly big krit is supposed to be a lyricist.

CORNY.

oh and I guess we're supposed to hold drake & big sean in some type of high-regard as well.
