what's deep about it?
Ross is speaking on his life and all of the people he's lost on his way to success, and he's introspectively trying to reconcile his own success with the fact that so many of his people didn't make it there with him

He's also speaking on the average black male growing up in an impoverished environment that turns to doing dirt to survive even though they know that what they're doing is wrong

WOW.....so because he didn't give a nuanced academic response in interview his music is fake deep? You just a hater

And yall wonder why nikkas don't even take interview questions about the shyt. No wonder rappers aim their career for the low hanging fruit, nobody asks you for academic level interview responses or nuanced descriptive first person lyrics when you're rapping about fukkin bytches or stunting. But you'll get crucified for trying to be positive with these ridiculous goalposts.

nikkas are acting like he didn't just say this on his new album:

Yesterday I got a call like from my dog like 101
Said they killed his only son because of insufficient funds
He was sobbin', he was mobbin', way belligerent and drunk
Talkin' out his head, philosphin' on what the Lord had done
He said: "K-Dot, can you pray for me?
It's been a fukked up day for me
I know that you anointed, show me how to overcome."
He was lookin' for some closure
Hopin' I could bring hi mcloser
To the spiritual, my spirit do no better, but I told him
"I can't sugarcoat the answer for you, this is how I feel:
If somebody kill my son, that mean somebody gettin' killed."
Tell me what you do for love, loyalty and passion of
All the memories collected, moments you could never touch

I'll wait in front a nikkas spot and watch him hit is block
I'll catch a nikka leavin' service if that's all I got
I'll chip a nikka, then throw the blower in his lap
Walk myself to the court like, "bytch, I did that!"
Ain't no Black Power when your baby killed by a coward
I can't even keep the peace, don't you fukk with one of ours
It be murder in the street, it be bodies in the hour...

The verse is obviously a self-aware tongue in cheek commentary about the cycle of violence. Why then did he give such a stupid ass answer in his interview that amounted to suggesting that the "lil homies" are simply too ignorant to know better? I don't care what level of education you have, if someone murders the loves of your life you will want revenge.

people in this thread have stated that sweeping analysis of groups of people and anything that's not firsthand experience is fake deep...ross is now disqualified (not that a nikka who told us noriega owes him, the local c/o who co-opted the life of an imprisoned gangster, 100 favors should be an example of real and/or depth in the first place :mjlol:)

This verse is part of the reason why I can't rock with Kendrick for the most part

He used a (possibly)fabricated story just to spit some violent kill fantasy bars on a track.

He didn't even try and make it sound like a real story(drop a fake name or something, anything)

breh aint say they're too ignorant to know better, breh said he's in position to show them a different way. and sorry, if you think that banging life is all there is you are too ignorant to know better. i know plenty people in that lifestyle who know there are other options, they just don't know how to get them, don't care to get them, or feel it's too late/they're destined to be in the life they're in now.

You're being obtuse on purpose, but that's cool, you're emotional about your hipster messiah

I don't care how YOU feel about the track, I said I PERSONALLY think it's deep. Your opinion on it means nothing to me /shrug

I'm not sure what "sweeping analysis" you think you read, but you should probably read the lyrics I posted. That's why I posted them smh

Also, I'm not sure why you think Ross isn't speaking from firsthand experience, but again, you're attempting to frame the discussion illogically because you're emotional

how am i emotional? who is my hipster messiah? if you're referring to kendrick you'll not see one post of me stanning dude, i don't care how people feel about the breh. and ross is a fukking liar...i'm not saying everything is a fabrication, but i he's far from the example of "real" anything i'd put in this thread.

and you don't care how someone else feels about the track - great, clearly a shytload of other people need to take that advice and stop calling shyt "fake deep" because it didn't do enough for them

I know you're not specifically addressing me but I didn't give that type of answer at all.

It's impossible to be fake deep about a topic that directly concerns yourself. If you've been incarcerated and experienced racial profiling, false imprisonment, trumped up charges, etc. then you're addressing the prison industrial complex in a real way by addressing yourself. If you grew up without a father because he did a 15 year bid your entire childhood, talking about growing up without a father is addressing the prison industrial complex in a real way without ever having been to jail yourself.

Conversely, talking directly about the existence of the prison industrial complex and how terrible it is while having no personal stake in it can still be moving if you're addressing it in a way that's true to yourself. It becomes corny when the way you address a topic comes off as not being true to your own voice, ESPECIALLY when you try to speak for others.

You can definitely talk about something you haven't experienced firsthand if the way you address it is true to yourself. Ergo, if a black middle class rapper that grew up with two parents said something like "My mama said to be courteous to officers/but deep down I wonder why they stalking us" I'd understand that from their POV they're disillusioned with law enforcement in this country even if it's not from the perspective of being railroaded or beaten up.

Do I expect Kendrick when expressing himself about the cycle of violence in his community to give an answer that goes a little deeper than to say "stay in school kids"?

post-25374-Michael-Jordan-YEAH-gif-Imgur-X3MA.gif

It would be one thing if he was talking about unemployment or poverty... The topic of the interview was community violence. Reading books and staying in school won't stop a fistfight from happening on campus at lunch or right after school. It's not going to stop your surrounding family members and friends meeting their untimely demise from a bullet either.

Simply put he didn't really address the topic.

Rappers don't have to have all the answers they just have to be skillful at illustrating their reality. Plenty of dope artists have trouble explaining their shyt in a static interview format. Nas is a good example of this.

I'd like to see that Kendrick interview ya'll are referencing tho

That's still THEIR OPINION, something you should not care about as much as you clearly do smh

You can call Ross a liar all you want, did he lie anywhere on that track I posted?? I can post a ton of introspective Ross tracks in here but y'all only care about the C.O. drama/gossip, not his actual artistry /shrug
