he gave one example of an alternative. i haven't read the whole interview so i don't know if it would fit for him to outline a whole 10-point plan, but i don't know many people who add 17 alternatives to an "i can show them x instead y" statement.
and the bolded is exactly the mentality he wants to break. you're not keeping that on you in compton because you fear bears or a rapist, you're keeping it on you in response to the "anything can pop off" mentality of the hood, because some other dude with a lack of respect for life may roll up on you. people need to get over that "ready for whatever" mentality when it comes to dealing with each other, that needs to be the stance to outsiders...our oppressors.
That is exactly my point though, these kids live in FEAR. They often live in fear of being hungry, in fear of being weak, in fear of their own family and peers, in fear of incarceration, etc. Violence is one of the most natural responses to fear that there is. It (temporarily) gives you agency instead of always feeling like the victim.
Your point about these fears being misdirected at ourselves instead of our oppressors is very true. Having knowledge of self isn't quite the same as believing in yourself and your people though...You can recognize that the institutionalization of neighborhoods like Rosecrans stems from the oppression of outsiders but still hold the same negative views of your own people which stem from deeply internalized fear. Kendrick has made a number of statements that lead me to believe that deep down he sees his people as a lost cause.
