Real Depth as a working definition should be knowledge gleamed from experts
in the field, first hand knowledge and/or something supported by facts/figures.

I don't wanna hear some rapper talk about the importance of learning to grow tomato's over fukking
Calculus or how "Gangsta rap makes gangsters" not socioeconomic factors that are entirely
more complex than what's popular on the radio.

THAT'S being fake deep, let's not pretend that people who don't know jack shyt abut a given topic aren't
given a platform to speak regularly because they're more lyrical than their peers.

ironic coming from a kung fu kenny fan :sas2:

can we get back to the other question - so what is "real deep"? who is "real deep"? can i see examples of "real deep" so i can sharpen my "fake deep" identification skills? :jbhmm:

There are very good examples of whats "real deep" on here.

Fake deep is actually a very smart term in the way it is being used in 2017. It is the objection to the conscious rap that gets propped up by hiphop heads when its nothing more than surface level acknowledgements of social injustisces

When Drake brought up Black men being killed by police in Charged Up, only to never return to the subject ever again in his music. That was cheap exploitation and fake intellectual garbage.

He has spoken about cop killings before and after that but that line is definitely fake deep

Kendrick never said he was deep though, I remember him saying the opposite in a song.

Fake deep would be making a song about a issue.

Being interviewed or questioned about said issue and being ignorant to it or going back on your words.

WOW.....so because he didn't give a nuanced academic response in interview his music is fake deep? You just a hater

And yall wonder why nikkas don't even take interview questions about the shyt. No wonder rappers aim their career for the low hanging fruit, nobody asks you for academic level interview responses or nuanced descriptive first person lyrics when you're rapping about fukkin bytches or stunting. But you'll get crucified for trying to be positive with these ridiculous goalposts.

Do I expect Kendrick when expressing himself about the cycle of violence in his community to give an answer that goes a little deeper than to say "stay in school kids"?

post-25374-Michael-Jordan-YEAH-gif-Imgur-X3MA.gif

It would be one thing if he was talking about unemployment or poverty... The topic of the interview was community violence. Reading books and staying in school won't stop a fistfight from happening on campus at lunch or right after school. It's not going to stop your surrounding family members and friends meeting their untimely demise from a bullet either.

Simply put he didn't really address the topic.

This is an example of a deep song to me

[Intro: Rick Ross]
God forgives, He's so honorable
But livin' amongst thieves and nikkas like myself
You will not have that luxury

[Verse 1: Rick Ross]
I wake up excited, I made it through the night
Things I did in the dark, will it ever see the light?
My nerves should be a wreck, I got a bad chick
She keeps me erect, she loves my ad-libs

I think I'm a genius, hundred grand a fukkin' feature
I do at least three a week, roll up the fukkin' reefer
Went from Benihana to Bimini in Bahamas
Ten chains, no luggage, I'm a big timer
nikkas claim that they thuggin' when they dikk-ridin'
My nikkas rather walk, do they own brick climbin'

On the block in my all white sneakers
Lord knows in my ten Jesus pieces

Pray for me cause you know a nikka doin' wrong
My homie in the cell, so I had to write a poem
Count mills for the times that we had it hard
Askin' for a hundred mill as I pray to God

[Hook: Rick Ross]
I do this for my nikkas facin' hard times
Can't be on them corners if you hustlin' part time
Ten chains on, Eric B with mob ties
Rakim flows, comin' from the Pharcyde

Blood diamonds and my pieces from apartheid
Quick to quote a prayer, pull it from the archives
I pray for every soul that this music reaches
Bury me a G, ten Jesus pieces

[Verse 2: Rick Ross]
Young nikka comin' up, they wanna gun you down
Drinkin' vodka in the memory of my nikka, damn (I miss you P-Nut)
Ridin' real slow on them all golds (we had them nikka)
Shoppin' for them Os when the mall close
Reppin' for your homies when they all gone
Get empowered then you put your dog on (Real shyt)
All black tees, ten gold chains
At the Super Bowl, but we in the dope game
Ten years strong in the same trap
Ten years blowin' on that strong pack

Lord knows that I wanna live right
But Lord knows what that Club Liv like
(right)
Forty dollar tab meanin' forty grand
Lil Wodie got it rolled up in a rubber band
Holdin' on the forty in his other hand
Ten chains on, smokin' in the motherland

[Hook: Rick Ross]
I do this for my nikkas facin' hard times
Can't be on them corners if you hustlin' part time
Ten chains on, Eric B with mob ties
Rakim flows, comin' from the Pharcyde

Blood diamonds and my pieces from apartheid
Quick to quote a prayer, pull it from the archives
I pray for every soul that this music reaches
Bury me a G, ten Jesus pieces

[Verse 3: Rick Ross]
I'm his poltergeist, nikkas know I'm more than nice
All these jewels on, all Moissanites
I could see it in the sparkle cause it lackluster
Black card maxed out, damn black brother
White collar, black market
Chrome Smith and Wesson, back pocket
Eight shot,
bytch I'm a top shotta
Screamin' your affiliations, but that don't matter
I'm flyin' first class as the snakes slither
Never blackmail a motherfukkin' killer
On trial and they wanna execute me
It's really sad, just the fact they never knew me

True G to the core, feel my texture
A true G keeps it raw in his lecture

Keep it simple, white tee, new sneakers
Dope boy style, ten Jesus pieces

[Hook: Rick Ross]
I do this for my nikkas facin' hard times
Can't be on them corners if you hustlin' part time
Ten chains on, Eric B with mob ties
Rakim flows, comin' from the Pharcyde

Blood diamonds and my pieces from apartheid
Quick to quote a prayer, pull it from the archives
I pray for every soul that this music reaches
Bury me a G, ten Jesus pieces

[Verse 4: Stalley]
Versace shirt, Jesus layin' on the chest
Man I swear Big did it the best,
I mean
Nas did it fresh,
Jay did it fresh, I mean
Ye did it fresh,
but man Big did it the best
And I was so impressed that I went and got ten
Now I'm stuntin' on these nikkas cause I couldn't back then
Rose gold, yellow gold, a couple platinum
And I wear them all at once, I ain't tryna match them
I remember bumpin' Mack 10 and that deuce in the corner
Scrapin' up for a sandwich and a soda

Now my strength is up and I'm danglin' chains off my shoulders
But no Jesus piece on mine, cause at times I feel ashamed
For the reason that I buy em

And they say, because I'm Muslim I shouldn't think about the shine
Or even put it in a rhyme

It's better things I could talk about or put my money towards
But for now, I'mma wear these ten chains and floss

[Hook: Rick Ross]
I do this for my nikkas facin' hard times
Can't be on them corners if you hustlin' part time
Ten chains on, Eric B with mob ties
Rakim flows, comin' from the Pharcyde

Blood diamonds and my pieces from apartheid
Quick to quote a prayer, pull it from the archives
I pray for every soul that this music reaches
Bury me a G, ten Jesus pieces

[Outro: Rick Ross]
We untouchable

[Outro Skits]
Xolaal sama guys, dundu ben yoon la
Dangay dundu sa dundu, gemm Yalla
Ligeey, xalis, gnax, amoul nelaw, gnafè
Sa life yako dugal, ken du ko jappale
Yow ya ray sa bopp ba dee. Moy loolu

Dios perdona, yo no

Deep is largely subjective like anything else, what's deep to me might not be to you and vice versa. It's all about relating to the subject matter.

At different stages of my life music I thought was deep at that moment doesn't hold up upon further review. shyt that I skimmed over at first glance years ago is actually deep to me now because I relate to it more. Some shyt is just incredible regardless of the era.

You don't have to be wordy to be deep, but I find rappers that use more words and fit them in the pocket of the beat to be deeper than Cat In The Hat ass rappers- and that's merely by virtue of being a writer. If you've never been a writer or lyricist you can't appreciate certain styles of rhyming and as a result you may dismiss them outright.

But that's not the rappers fault you just need to step your listening skills up, or maybe read a book or two.

What's ironic is you're popping off now about kendrick but had nothing to say when I called out
your boy Kevin Gates.

Get at me when you can answer this post :

The fact you think fukking Kevin "I support Stacey Dash" Gates is fukking "Real Rap" is
a fukkin joke breh.
The idea of someone even havin that bullshyt in their head tells me, I can only take Hip-Hop discussion
so serious on The Coli.

Kevin "I gotta white cuban sayin all types of N***as in my face" gates is a clown, like the living personification of
clown shoes.

Kevin Gates Agrees with Stacey Dash: "I Don’t Feel Like Black Lives Matter... ALL Lives Matter"

:snoop:

but..bu....what about Black on Black crime brehs :sadcam:

fukk Kevin Gates.
fukk his politics.
fukk the two people who fukked to make em.
And fukk anybody who rocks with that clown.

until then :laff:

@dora_da_destroyer these Kevin Gates quotes are a perfect example Smart Dumb-assery.
It isn't unique to people who aren't gangster rappers.

Gates is clearly institutionalized and mental.....I've never championed him as some social commentator but as an auteur whose ability to paint a picture and communicate emotions along with really good technical rapping ability makes him a top MC:comeon:

you on the other hand think kung fu kenny is kicking knowledge by saying "im no black no more thats a color" :russ:

But this cat dumbs his shyt down tho. So who's really fake?

Only talking about this song which did a great job of communicating the pain of dealing with the racist institution known as the American justice system :hubie:
