They’re talking about murder rate.

Chicago is a large, wealthy, world class city that lowers its rate. For what it’s worth it’s still the murder capital in raw numbers, its tracts of hoods alone are more populous than some of these smaller cities that have higher rates, and its gangs and culture are massively influential in spreading crime in other localities with Milwaukee itself being an example of that.

As someone who actually lives in Chicago, the actual murder/shooting numbers are lower than they were back in the 70s-90s (but they have risen in recent years compared to the 2000s). However back then, it was moreso in specific areas. Now it’s more random where it can happen. A lot more “this never happens in this area” stories than in the past.

Also, people are surviving gunshots more than in years past because of medical advancements. I remember the story about HS basketball legend, Ben Wilson. They say it’s possible he could’ve survived, but there was no trauma center in the area, and as a result, he died from his gunshot wounds.
