My Pops Forever RIP
Im sorry that shows how irrelevant nas is. Dude dropped 6 albums in 4 years and not one song connected outside of his fanbase
he makes songs for his fanbase. Nothing wrong with that. Now Nas makes a song every now and then with younger acts to try to stay connected to the youth, so I guess if we wanna knock Nas on anything it's that the hood ain't playing Spicy all day and night or YKTV. If we wanna knock Nas, I guess we can say most DJ's have a Hov set at a club, but not for Nas outside of a random playing of You Owe Me, but for me it's ok to rip these kids for being trapped in a trash bubble that you don't see in any other region.

NY all day..Da Stead & BK..
Nas problem is critics dont big him up like they used to, so even if he isnt selling, they could always point to awards, analysis, and reviews. The "this is art" crowd. They put Kenny in that spot now and dont need him anymore even if he's still putting out good stuff.
Nas was never a critical darling so I don't even get what u tryna say here. Outside his first album the critics always played games with Nas.

shyt like these threads makes me wonder how many young nikkas u cats be around. Let's set this shyt straight right now. YNs ain't listening to Jim, Nas, or Hov. They just not. U may find some here n there. But that's a serious minority. And I'm saying this as a nikka who be outside and be around. None of these stanbases on this site getting OD play in the hood like that by young nikkas. @Cladyclad I see u all thru this thread laughing and joking but regardless of how many hits Hov got. YNs in NYC ain't playing his shyt neither. An 18 year old now was like 10 years old when the last Hov album dropped and that shyt wasn't even aimed towards young nikkas then.

Nas was always seen as the artistic rapper while Jay was seen as the more commercial one. Regardless of actual reviews, that was always the perception and now Nas doesnt have that backing anymore because no one goes to bat for his artistry like they used to. And thats with KD winning the grammy.

Thats only partially true

Nas has had this truly weird trajectory where from IWW-Stillmatic Hip Hop, culture focused critics and publications gave Nas high marks and reviews while the white reviewers (ROLLING STONE) always shytted on him. For instance, The Source gave Stillmatic 5 Mics while Rolling Stone only gave it a fukking 2 stars. At around Gods Son things got really interesting, you can read the more mainstream reviews were glowing and then during the Streets Disciple era the mainstream reviews were praising it while the Hip Hop publications were more tepid. Things started to converge during the Def Jam era except for one entity, muthafukking Pitchfork. They trashed all of Nas albums in the Def Jam era except for Life Is Good (which they surprisingly praised) and went back to trashing the Hit-Boy run.

If you look at Metacritic, the only reason why the Hit-Boy albums aren’t the most acclaimed rap albums of the year of release is because of Pitchfork. NME, Rap Reviews, Clash and Hip Hop DX have all given rave reviews.

The issue with Nas and the press isn’t his albums. Its the fact that he’s never had an Elliot Wilson or Paul Rosenberg, or Akademiks to go to bat for him through thick and thin. Elliot Wilson would DIE for Jay-Z and proclaims his GOATNESS at every junction while downplaying Nas because he’s Jay’s only competition. Nas for all
intents and purposes, doesn’t cultivate dikk riders, doesn’t engage in payola, and doesn’t do bullshyt favors. He lets the music speak for itself.

It’s 2025 man. We don’t have to do this anymore lol. They’re all old artists now. People are just saying Jim ain’t what he think he is.

Chuck D isn't wrong. Chuck D put shyt into context.

Also even in terms of the kids....who are the kids listening to more, the guy who has less than 900k monthly listeners on Spotify or the guy with 9mil? Young kids aren't really listening to any old rapper BUT clearly more are listening to Nas than Jim Jones.

nikka. I don't care what it sells. Young nikkas ain't listening to Jay and that's FINE because that's not his target anymore anyway. Atleast I hope not. These lil nikkas ain't grow up or have an attachment to either one of these cats. All this Nas vs Jay Stan shyt is corny fam. Both them nikkas is rich legacy artist. Us arguing over who gets listened to more by young nikkas is like arguing over 2 dirty whips but about who whip is the dirtiest. They both need to be washed nikka. Lol. Noone wins this argument.

Nas was never a critical darling. It's literally the reason he's been fighting against his first album his entire career. Even Stillmatic got hated on by some critics. Nas wasn't a critical DARLING. not saying he was always critically panned. But Nas didn't play the industry game. And got shytted on for it. It's the reason why Nas' FIRST Grammy was in the twilight of his career.
