How do they come up with these stats? Austin has nearly 80 murders this year which is more then Atlanta but Atlanta made the list.
Austin’s at nearly 80 murders this year? That’s a record for Austin. I don’t think Austin has ever posted more than 50 murders in a calendar year. Almost 80 murders is astronomical for Austin standards.
The reason why Atlanta made it but not Austin is because of this little thing called Per Captia. The list in the OP is murder rate
per capita, where they based the amount of murders in a city per the population of the city. Because Austin city limits is on the cusp of 1million people and because Atlanta’s city limits is around only 500,000 at best, Atlanta has the higher
per capita murder rate because it’s only half the size of Austin while having almost the same amount of murders as Austin. Your chances of becoming a victim of murder and violent crime are significantly higher in ATL, than in Austin. Even in a year where Austin is having a historically high number of murders.
