I think you’re being far too reductionist. To say that one cannot get an idea of the cultural nuances of a people if you don’t live their is narrow minded. Do I speak German? No can I get by on business German or speak to a maroccan cab driver or waiter in English and German, yes. The immigrants have given me an interesting perspective on what it’s like living in all the cities I mentioned. My perspectives are limited to the immigrants and business people I interact with in my limited German and English.

Its the best result for a far right party in Germany since the Nazis. I dont want to downplay that, its extremely alarming.

German society should be in panic mode now and doing everything possible to stop them from gaining more support

What Donald Trump is doing in America shows people what they can expect if thr far right wins in their own country.

The appeal of far right parties is anti immigration. All parties now are anti immigrant so they don't have a unique appeal other than to billionaires who want a party that's easy to control and manipulate and who will give them free reign in the economy.

The way that ww2 is taught is SEVERELY incomplete. Corporations bankrolled and loved fascism as an ideology because it meant more deregulation and control over workers. Nazis dismantled unions and various worker protections. They were anti immigrant, they manipulated the media and spoke directly to their supporters.

The left needs to come together like voltron across the world and exchange tactics and put them into motion.

The media won't stop this. Social media won't stop this. Only people can stop this and they can only do that if they are given a vision of the hell they can expect if the right takes power(easy to do, all they'll need to do is see what's happening here) but then also a vision of what government under a left wing government would look like.

Democrats here are just controlled opposition. A serious opposition party would support its own version of project 2025(the green new deal) instead of rejecting it. There needs to be unity and that only happens when a creative individual or group is in touch with the electorate and is focused on their needs. Mexico and Brazil showed us how to do it, the world should be taking inspiration from them.

If the answer is "next to none" you are not in a strong position to make assertions about german political culture.

Even the way germans approach those sorts of discussions is different.

Same for social culture and history.

The UK and the US have shared language and still I would not take the word of a brit that he was an expert in american political culture without evidence.

Long term 2. Mid term - 5. Visited multiple times - all of the big ones.

Worked in german. Bought property in germany. Issued contracts in german.

I speak C1 german and can understand most conversations. I could survive there without speaking a word of english, if i wanted to.

When I first started working in Germany I visited everywhere. Including the wild east. Maybe I have been to 50 cities more than once. I have lost count.

To list them would take too long.

All in more than 10 years. Easily. I am going back to germany in two weeks, to fix my car (german) and sort out some bills.

I have a german bank account, I have taken exams in german, I have a german driving license, a german home ..

Look at the percentages.

German politics is not first past the post like in UK/US.

The CDU still have to build a majority coalition to govern and that is where the complications start to creep in.

And as the AFD share grows the question of ignoring the will of the people will start to be increasingly raised.

I was talking about German civil society. But you clearly live there so I’m sure you have a better understanding of their dynamics than I do

too many of them are conservative in nature because german culture is itself conservative.

it resists change. wants standardisation. assigns personhood, rather than ability based roles. female KKK = kinder, kuche and kirche. children, kitchen and church I think the saying goes. the expert is typically a white, male, "qualified" academic etc.

Fyi Germany uses the parliamentary system. Its not a two party winner take all democracy like ours. The minority parties in German can still effectively resist the fascists. They just have to work together. A damn near impossibility in the states....but that's by design.
