We all know about American and European imperialism. But just like the voters in Chicago, getting up in Brandon Johnson's ass over the migrant crisis, voters aren't thinking about their government's imperialism when in that booth.

This is true but it is more complicated. Some of the most right win nations in Europe (Hungary and Poland) have some of the lowest immigrant populations per capita. Also, this far right problem has been growing for a while. There was a book in the 1990s called The Beast Returns that talks about how far-right ex-Nazis immediately went to organizing in the old eastern bloc countries after the fall of communism. They have been agitating and building before the immigration got critical but this put nitro in their tank.

I don't know if it's as simple as that. If there is a trend growing it's of absolute importance to take it seriously. Trump MAGA lost in 2020 and here we are 5 years later. If support for AfD is surging what's to say they won't win next election?

Adolf got 18% in 1930, and 37% in 1932. 37% was not a majority. The established parties refused to work with the nazis (and the communists) so tried a minority (plurality) govt. Hitler was appointed chancellor my the president and ... took over.
So hitler never won a majority in an election.
That is why the german brandmauer exists. Hitler got in through the back door and they want to avoid the same thing happening again.
Realpolitik says that talk is cheap and the AFD knows it. They are playing the long game because they know germany is in an economic bind, which will drive increasing numbers towards them. They know that Germany doesn't like immigrants and the general feeling in germany is that immigration has failed. As merkel put it.
