What, because we are outlining the inconsistencies in logic?

If the government wants to shut everything down all summer, they should be paying everybody 75% of their income like other countries.

$1200 doesn’t even pay rent for one month. So, we’re expecting people to lose their houses, not be able to feed their children, unable to pay bills? That’s the government fukking up. That’s the government killing people

Also, as I outlined with addiction, the government and society seems to have no problem letting all those people die and ruin their families lives.

Where’s the empathy there?
Now I definitely don’t disagree with this specific post even a little bit. None of this is wrong and I agree with what you’re saying here.

but I don’t think covid19 and the opioid crisis as health/economic threats are all that comparable. And I say this as a former opioid addict.

but this is a solid post

But your comparison lacks logic, you're comparing apples and oranges while none of your examples equate to the scale or timeline of covid-19.

You're comparing annual death rates from things such as addiction and suicide to the death rate of a virus where the first reported US case was late January. It is not even a full 3 months later and the expected death rate in the US alone is expected to hit your addiction numbers by August. 7 months!!!! That number could be significantly higher or lower but several facts still remain, we don't fully understand the virus, its mutations, its patterns/cycles, immunity, and the only form of prevention is to limit human contact.

Repeat that to yourself, the only way you can avoid getting a highly contagious respiratory disease is to limit human interaction. Not just stay away from those with visible symptoms and infection but to completely limit your contact because you can be infected by asymptomatic carriers. How do you function like normal when you can't readily identify who is infected, thousands of people are rapidly infected, you can't be immunized and researchers are not certain of natural antibody immunity?

And news flash, the government doesn't give a sh*t about people dying of covid, just like they don't care about addicts and the mentally ill...their empathy is for their wallet which is forcing them to act.

No they won't. Regardless of how many people die they'll just blame somebody else (Obama) or rationalize it.

We gotta stop this "Once it gets bad enough, Trump supporters will wake up" line of thinking. Cults don't work like that. :yeshrug:

Once the virus kills off a lot of these rednecks, and the NFL season cancelled, a lot of wealthy people gonna be pissed at Trump for fukking their money up. In fact, a lot of wealthy people lost money thanks to his incompetence.

Rapid amounts of dead rednecks, starvation, and a destroyed economy will make a lot of former non-voters, get up and vote.

Thread is getting disgusting, feels like I'm in TLR.

Some the most highly educated and successful people in this thread are also devoid of empathy.

And they try to force other people to engage in their viewpoints. Thats the morbid thing. Convincing other people to share their views of death, and not respecting other people's right and determination to live.

It sounds like a JBO thread. Not Even TLR quality.

What exactly is "lose/lose" about this? All this talk about "choices" and "is the number of deaths worth everyone being locked down so long", besides being the kind of fatalist, nihilistic stance that just rubs people as needlessly callous at a time like this, is also ignorant to the reality of how we're already fukked economically.

We're at Great Depression levels of unemployment now. Ease up too quickly, and you end up with a bigger economic contraction. If we ease up on restrictions too soon, and another wave of the virus kicks off, do you really think people really are going to be out and about, doing the kind of spending at the same levels as before the virus shut everything down?

The economic damage, both now and probably for the rest of this year at least, is done. We just have to accept the economic pain at this point.

It's better to plan on how to slowly open things back up in a way that doesn't end in a second wave of the virus running rampant and letting the economy slowly recover over time than to try getting back to normal too quickly and end up having the exact opposite of that happen instead.
Not to mention if you reopen and coronavirus becomes endemic to the US, rolling through the country every few month killing thousands, when most of the world is focused on as close to eradication as possible, expect lots of other countries to restrict your travel.

The time will come one making a decision to reopen the economy. That time isnt now.

The government needs to focus on helping it's citizens first, but your present administration seems incapable of doing that.
