Personally, I don't agree with it. But many reports have said that the biggest spreading events are happening indoors and with poorly ventilated rooms. Bars, Restaurants, etc are making up the bulk of new cases from something I read recently.
Secondly, folks who say masks don't protect you 100% from the virus are right but they do reduce viral load which is just as good and probably better. Here is why. There have been several studies that have shown that the initial viral load determines how bad of a reaction you will get to the virus. So, let's say a low viral load is 100 and a high is 10000. The mask ensures if you do get it, you will more likely get a viral load of 100 than 10000. The folks who get the 10000 viral loads are the folks in the hospital while the people closer to 100 may range from asymptomatic to mild cases. On top of that, there is evidence to show once you catch it, you get the immunity to some degree but they don't know for sure if this is long term. So, in a way, the best scenario is to wear a mask, get the virus, hope for the mildest case which is most likely with the mask, and now you're inoculated from the virus. But we can't do that because you got people who even refuse to wear the mask.
This is why they think early on a lot of doctors in China were dying left and right due to poor PPE because they were getting that 10000 viral load range. Now, this doesn't happen in America because we have top notch PPE and its known its needed to reduce infection or minimize the intensity of the infection.
This is why I personally wasn't "outraged" when they were showing people at the beach and stuff when it appeared at least people are not on top of each other. The advantage of being outside is that if you spray out a mist of virus, its immediately getting diluted by being in the open wide air and things like wind are further providing dilution by making it scatter into smaller clusters instead of a person just getting hit with a big dense cloud like you're more likely to encounter in a bar.
Folks don't want to believe that the BLM protests didn't result in as big of spikes as saying Florida for example allowing 100% capacity in bars and restaurants but in this context the data makes sense. Enclosed spaces, especially with poor ventilation, seem to be the ideal environment to spread it. Being outside seems to be probably one of the safest places. But public health officials aren't going to advocate for this and instead advocate for more draconian measures for now because Americans are failing the basics of the first step of this more rational response which is to simply wear a fukking mask.
