This is just a guess because I don't personally know any Newsom supporters despite living in CA. People that want to go back to interacting with politics passively. White people, AIPAC supporters Daily Show viewers, run of the mill libs, etc.
I'm not convinced some of those voters even are a fan of newsome specifically independents, I'd argue out of all the choices even other ones I hate ( shapiro) newsome would be the worst candidate we could attach the party to over the next 4 years. If the next election is free and fair it will be a layup so this will be the opportunity to actually push through a strong candidate that will be transformational the next 8 years, instead of someone who will lose in 4 to another fascist regime. JD Vance isn't a concern to me at all, what's a concern to me is after trump dems have a 12 month run way

Sure. But that's on the other candidates. Newsom has been the most transparent about his ambitions and that has resulted in him being seen as the frontrunner. Everyone else is being coy.

There are plenty of hands up Newsom's ass as well. I think it is incumbent on Newsom to do a better job articulating how/why he is a better alternative to Vance that is beyond "Trump". Newsom shows up on the same podcasts, is courting the same voters, Is sharing opinions about ICE that people are claiming are out of step with the party. If he becomes the nominee he should at least earn it.

No one is saying Newsom is their first choice. The distinction is that if the general election is between Newsom and Vance, Newsom is the far better choice.
