The issue is this. The majority of white people vote republican and will always do so. Many of them don't hold republicans accountable either. Republicans can say repeal and replace for like 10 years about Obamacare and never actually float a valid plan to replace it. They can use the courts to dismantle it and even go as far as remove people's coverage for pre-existing conditions then lie about it and say they aren't gonna do it and nobody will question them on it.
A minority of white people look at what republicans do and see that all their policies are mostly to benefit rich people at the expense of the poor and middle class so they vote for democrats. Elections come down to how much of that section of white people and how much minorities in general turn out and who they vote for.
When it comes to real progressive stuff (typically that benefits common people first and furthermost neither the republican or democrat party are interested in pushing that. Both parties answer to their donors and the donors don't want that.
Progressives have the entire political machine working against them. Democrats truth be told would rather republicans have power than progressives. Republicans obviously don't want progressives in power. Nobody is trying to turn the US into Venezuela but that's how progressive policies get portrayed.
