you have to hold puff accountable for why we are where we are now.

You always blame Puff. As a kid I grew up in the Jiggy/Shiny Suit Era when it was at it's peak so it's hard for me to hate it. Can you explain in a linear/non riddle fashion why you hate it so much?

It's when Hip Hop started becoming more of a mainstream, radio-friendly genre I guess.

So Hip Hop was never supposed to become main stream? I really think that part was inevitable tbh. If Puff didn't do it it would've been someone else. nikkas love to shine.

Yeah but it became more pop oriented and dumbed down, thus slowly deteriorating..

Whilst Trap rap isn't exactly mainstream, it's still dumbed down, generic and essentially the opposite of what Hip Hop originally was/supposed to be:yeshrug:

No art form started by us could ever stay in the shadows. It's destined to become popular regardless. That's why there will always be an underground and always be the mainstream. It's not so much a sellout thing as it is a means to an end. Hip Hop started out in the dark just like Jazz Blues and Rock but eventually it always finds it's way to the masses. Once it hits that level it just has to become formatted for easier consumption. I'm not saying the artform and culture didn't suffer but that happens with every culture. You have the real true and living god and the servants and then eventually you get mega churches. It's just the dualities of creation at play throughout the world we live in.

Is OP a cac? Even better question.
Only took 5 post before race was brought up.
I'm impressed.

And yeah the argument is made when every twist of hip hop gets pushed to the forefront.
I think the real issue is when I look back on the 90s. Hip hop was more diverse. I mean like general hip hop. You didn't have to go hunting underground to find a group like say camp lo or even the fugees.
Now rappers just seem generic and stick to a formula . Put on a trap beat and mumble.

I guess since the money is less it attracts less talented people I dunno. But thats the one observation.

Oh yeah another thought it could also be that rap has come full circle where you now have a generation of rappers who really only listen to rap. Like GfK outkast grew up listening to Sade etc.

Hip Hop started as party music with basic, dumbed down chant like lyrics though. Sounds like trap is exactly is what hip hop was supposed to be.

Lyrical content = SUBJECT MATTER

You giving JAY a pass for his criminal subject matter simply cause he is SKILLED

But regardless JAY rapped in first person he promoted beinga hustler >>> rapper

We went from CLOSE THE CRACKHOUSE to DEAD PRESIDENTS

We went from SELF DESTRUCTION to BIG PIMPING

The anti dope anti pimp mentality of the 80s got murked by cats like JAY Z in the 90s

he wasnt just "reporting" it he and a few others blurred the lines and had people believing HE WAS ACTUALLY DOING IT

Thats what actually put the nail in the coffin for real hip hop which influenced the ATL trap sound

Which Corporate America got behind

Jay made it comfortable for nikkas to rap about cocaine in first person....

Lets call it what it is...
Very interesting argument but the point could be made that he just reflected he shift in the mentality where instead of the dope pusher being ridiculed he was glorified and initially on the streets rappers were ridiculed and so the two . movements aligned.
Rappers became like dope dealers and then dope users.
Also there is a factor of we are getting old and tbh theusic isn't for us.
I remember during the 90s during the height of hip hop old folks were complaining so really who knows man.
My dad KNOWS old school music and he was always Meh when he would hear me listening to samples. Esp when he would ask me about the original and I had no clue

Atlanta! Hey ya was by 3staccs right? What genre was that love below album? Wasnt hip hop, and its success changed shyt. Without that no lollipop from wayne which started his demise. Outkast are my top 3 groups ever too but its true. So bam from that u get future, ti whatever u like etc. Aka genre bending. Devin the dude wasnt a rapper full time from jump so i cant blame him but 3staccs. That album birthed rappers moonlighting as singers to crossover. Cee Lo always did both his style was half rap half sing since cell therapy. Luke and new Orleans originated the stripper anthems but they were underground. Now ushers saying he dont mind. The stripper fetish started in Atlanta with magic citys rise in the bmf days. They made it to where nikkas wanted a thick bytch and it was ok to pay for it. When joc, soulja boy, d4l etc had dudes in the club doing routines and got rich.. Ever since look around. Lyrics died with gucci. Cuz jeezy was a punchline nikka infact all boys in the hood could rap. Check the freestyles n mixtapes. Gucci was so straight to the point the nikkas he inspired had no appreciation for metaphors similies coded slang rhyme patterns and all the shyt greats from everywhere else hang there hats on. Midwest listen to any midwest legend bet they nice with the pen. West coast nikkas always could rhyme. Kurupt was crippin hard but look at how he put it together. Eastsidaz, jayo felony, quik, spice 1 etc. The bay been talkin briccs n bows its just coded. Hence thizz.. There underground scene was doin today mainstream numbers. Too short played his own basslines too. I can go on n on legend by legend city by city. The south n trap are not to blame its Atlanta. Not because they lacc talent, but the fact youve had a stranglehold on this shyt over 10 years and all of the criticised changes were brought about by yall. Dem franchise boys sound rakim compared to a trap mumble nikka. Yall devalued lyrics.
