Grunge is a fusion of punk and metal that started because people were tired of the over the top Glam/Hair meta bands that dominated the airwaves throughout the 80s. Every song was just about banging chicks and partying so grunge bands started to make music about real issues that people were dealing with and how they didn’t have much hope about the future. Punk was a little bit angrier and more uptempo like you said and had been around since the 70s

Sex Pistols pioneered punk of which grunge became somewhat of a offshoot of, but grunge had more "soul", while the style of punk that the Pistols did was devoid of soul. I guess if you wanna go that route, a black band from Detroit invented punk.
