So she instead started working with unknown writers and producers at the time. one of them being "The Family" Missy, Tim, Ginuwine, Stattic, Magoo, Playa. Aaliyah and them clicked, and the rest was history. Aaliyah was their big break.

Ehhhh...I know what you're saying and it's certainly not the first time I have heard this, but without question, Puffy is a key figure in the growth of hip hop. Your favorite rapper had some success (notoriety, financial) in the past 20 years or so? It's likely due, at least in part, to Puff.

If you remember rap before Puff, you had cats on records talking about Jettas and other reasonably priced cars they picked up girls with. After Puff, you had to impersonate a damn millionaire to get attention.

Let me stop you right there, because I'm an older cat and I was there in that generation before Puff. You are right that Jettas, Pathfinders and Maximas were what was hot back then, but you need to realize that

1) 98% of rappers were not getting the type of money to get more expensive cars

2) Benz's, BMW's, Range Rovers and other high end foreign cars were just not as aesthetically appealing back then, particularly to a young hip hop crowd. (but that is a Rolls Royce Eric B. and Rakim are sitting on on the Follow the Leader album cover)

3) Please don't underestimate the materialism of the 80's. Have you seen the chains and 3 finger rings those dudes wore? Do you know how much those Dapper Dan suits cost?

Puff just took it to the next level which was only the natural progression of things.
