Also who would you rather have in the playoffs? Prime Dirk or Prime KG?

This isn't even close. It's Dirk

Except basketball has never and will never work like that. You can't just add KG to the Mavs in '01 and expect the numbers to transfer across the boards. You add KG and the offense changes in such a way that Nash and Finley's numbers might go down because the flow of the offense would change based on KG's game. Dirk creates mismathces on the offensive side of the ball, opens up lanes and changes spacing in a way KG never could. I completely reject the idea that the difference on the offensive side between Dirk and KG is negligible, while the difference on the defensive side is a chasm. You can't judge offense by comparing 24 points to 21 and deciding that those 3 points don't matter much. KG is simply not even fukking close to dirk's level as a offensive genius.

Dirk flamed out once to an 8 seed, but just about every other playoff loss was to a very good team, even when the Mavs were seeded higher, in a tough Western conference where seeds 1-5 were all capable of making runs to the conference finals depending on who they matched up with in the playoffs. Dirk also - come rain or shine - made Dallas good for 50-60 wins every year for a decade. In that sense, he was Tim Duncan lite. And KG doesn't have that to his credit. KG was done no favors by the Minny front office, but that still doesn't completely excuse all those years of not even making the playoffs.

Dirk won a championship against 3 future hall of famers including a guy who will be in the conversation for GOAT and another who will be in the conversation for top 5-7 shooting guards of all of all time, and he did it with old and spare parts. J. Kidd put up 8 & 8, shot 36%, and couldn't keep any guards in front of him on D. JJ Barea can barely contribute to the Wolves, and he was a significant part of that Mavs squad. Dirk's championship run was quite clearly and simply one of the most awesome runs a superstar has had.

I agree with @Malta - you can easily build around Dirk. KG is the ultimate player to add to a team. Also, Dirk's skillset isn't one that falls off a cliff with age. While Struggle knees is shooting 35% and stinking it up in Brooklyn, Dirk is putting up 21 a game on 47% shooting, still. That's remarkable.

But The case for KG rests on his defense.

Where did KG shut down or limit superstars in the playoffs? If you can't give me answers how can you say his d is more impactful then Dirk's offense?

YOu can't measure defense like that. Look at team defense ratings for the Celtics post 2008 with KG on the floor and KG off the floor. In his prime, he used to do so many little things. FOr example, his timing on double teams used to be perfect when facing elite guards. He had the speed and wingspan to reach over and make shots more difficult.

In the end, in a 48 minute game, all that little stuff adds up and that's why KG has had such an impact on the defensive end. On the other hand, I've always been a Dirk fan but dear god he's crap on defense.

Also, as was pointed out by several people, Dirk did not develop his full arsenal until 2008. IF Dirk's specialty is offense, he should not have been guarded successfully by 6-7 S. Jax, 6-4 B.Diddy or even 6-8 Udonis Haslem. Your type of argument cuts both ways. I'm not going to say Dirk is overrated on offense because he was shut down by smaller players, however.

I've been a fan of both players. In my objective view, KG in his prime was better. Dirk's post-prime is better. Or maybe he's a late peaker.

When it's all over and we compare their careers

Dirk > Garnett

Shouldn't be debatable. Dirk will finish around 7th - 9th all time scoring list :wow:

Are you saying that since Dirk will be ranked higher on the all time scoring list that he is automatically better than K.G.?

let me know when he carries his team to the title.

let me know when he goes toe to toe with two of the all-time greats and takes their collective souls.

bosh_crying.jpg

Let me know when KG get's straight up sonned by the number 8 seed in the year he won the MVP...

Toe to Toe? Show me one clip...just one...of Dirk being anywhere near Bosh, Bron, or Wade, on defense in that entire series...

Cats out here making it seem like Dirk was out here putting in all this work when he spent that whole series hiding on Joel Anthony on defense and hitting wide open 18 footers save that one slow motion game winning layup

Cats act like Dirk hasn't played with more all-stars during his career than any other "star" player in basketball...

LOL Dirk has played with 2 hall of fame point guards...most teams have never had 1 hall of fame point guard at anytime in their history...

KG has repeatedly gone deep into the playoffs...he was within seconds of winning back to back titles...

Dirk won his 1 title and did what the next year...got swept off the face of the earth by OKC...and then he did what the next year...oh yeah got fat after his surgery and smoothed watched the playoffs on a television that probably isn't bigger than mine

I don't think anybody who has posted in this thread HATES Dirk. We just think KG was better. I actually hate KG more because he acts like such a fukking retard. But he was a better player PERIOD.

Co-sign...nobody is saying Dirk is a scrub...Dirk is a hands down first ballot HOF...but the issue is that when his stans compare him to KG...or are even have the gall to compare him to Duncan...the only argument they can ever make for Dirk is that he scores more points...after we go past the points...it is a no contest...I have never once ever heard a dirk stan make any case for his rebounding or his defense...as if those things are not important at all..

I mean look at the premise of this thread...Dirk is great because he is higher on the all time scoring list than KG is...he should be...he's made over 1000 more 3's than KG...because KG doesn't shoot 3's...I hope Dirk could pass him...it'd be pretty fukking sorry to shoot more than a 1000 3 pointers than a guy and still not be above him on the scoring list...actually that is kind of sorry...with all those 3 pointer attempts...literally 10 times more attempts than KG...and Dirk is just now passing him on the scoring list...:patrice:

Why do you keep focusing on defense? Dirk beat the Heat, something the rest of this league has yet done. Respect the man or I'm going to make it difficult for you to walk around this city in peace.

Well when it's all said and done and Dirk will be number 5/6 and KG will be at 12, if that helps. And KG is ahead of Reggie Miller, so what does your logic prove once again? :ohhh:

Anyone going by total points scored is an idiot.

Going by that logic Karl Malone is the second greatest player ever, Paul Pierce is greater than Duncan and Antwan Jamison is better than Magic Johnson.
