Those deejays that use serato and have never used vinyl aren't real djs..
Sucker DJ... Just Press Play! (Fake DJ's) - YouTube
I am a DJ ... and though I agree with the thread premise ... the video thats above .. really doesn't show what the "classic defintion of DJs are" ... as with most things in music ... we get stuck on the 90's defintion of anything MC's, Rappers, DJs that we lump anyone doing something similiar in the term without re-establishing new terms for obviously an evolved new way of doing things.
Nyggas like Deadmau5 and Alesso .. shyt Swedish house mafia .. aren't DJ's .. when you see them at concerts ... THEY ARE PERFORMERs .. and their art is really "producing" ... they produce music .. but have to Perform it live @ a concert because thats the house culture .. they hit play .. but then they do a lot of Eq'ing and add a lot of FX and some simple programming to enhance the live performance ... yea its not scratching .. but would 100 K people go to a concert to see a negro scratch?
Again I'm a Dj to does scratch (when necessary not neessarily during parties .. maybe do a few chirps and crab scratches) ... also .. for example .. Dj Drama and Dj Whoo kid and Khaled are mixtape Djs ... They are more DJs/Producers .. as in they are more concerned about trying to expose new Music they created (produced <--- and even this term needs to be redefined cuz they don't make beats) rather than be the "traditional dj" who gets records and tries to break em
The argument of real Djs and vinyl is so outdated .. Vinyl is finished. I still use digital vinyl cuz I like the feel but i dont knock anyone who uses cdjs or anything else to mix ... DJing nowadays is less about talent and more than branding .... You can be the technically best DJ ever and that wont get you no where but winning a few International scratch battle contests ..
Serato has made "being a DJ" just as easily as in house condenser microphone as made it easy to "become a rapper".
Stop holding on to the traditional forms of what you believe music or roles in music are .. Times have changed and will continue to change.
They even have iTunes DJ ... everyone is technically a DJ these days ..
Matter of fact .. Music isn't even most available on "Vinyl" or "Compact Discs" anymore .. its mp3 files ...
Funk Flex who I think you all would admit is a legendary "DJ" in your outdated definition .. rocks out on CDjs .. and actually prefers to use them when hes doing a lot of club spots ... Vinyl is good but only when ur the only Dj rocking all night .. and needles can get expensive repairing .. and just not worth it ..
Shyt the biggest producer of record players "Technics" went outta business .. Nyggas look at 1200's as a vintage .. fossil. Get up to date negros.
Not to sound condescending but nobody is bringing around crates now .. Those who did and put the groundwork for DJs like myself and others .. respect them fully .. but because someone never lugged around a crate ... or only has to travel with their laptop (which ALL CLUB DJs do this now) does not mean they aren't a "true DJ" .... also and I dont wanna run my post long but def very passionate about this. People use to love scratching records because there was a break beat as the backbone of most Hip hop songs ... so it was easy to do and actually sonically sounded great. Nowadays ... all you hear is synths and 808's ... you barely have more than 5 seconds of a clean acapella or a clean kick or snare to do much intense scratching with ..
Anyone that wants to be DJ will know this pitchfork int he road you get to .. do you want to be that basement DJ known as the "scratching nikka" who everyone on the internet says DAMNNN HE NICE cuz of a few vids u put up .. but gets no bookings because club promoters really dont give a f*ck about that .. or you wanna be the nygga getting paid because you play music what is relevant now for the crowd you got.
If you wanna show off your skills .. drop mixtapes .. Nobody wanna hear them live no more though ... People dont even like the DJ talking too much (except in dancehall) .. Nyggas in parties be so faded they just want music to blend
