It seems like nobody on here actually likes hip hop and I know this board skews older but some of the takes on here about current hip hop are so bad that it makes me question if y’all haven’t listened to music in 25 years:jbhmm: if you looked here you’d think you’re in 1998 instead of 2021 and hip hop is dead when’s it’s never been as versatile and big as it is today.

So do y’all like hip hop?

I'm going to sound like a hypocrite...

I love today's music and have adapted to it..

The problem is, there is no kinds of versatility at the forefront of the culture...

Hip hop is sort of like the barometer of the streets...the different kind of people you interacted with were represented musically

If I had a discussion with the black gods, they were represented musically

If i had a discussion with the "reformed felon", he was represented musically

If I had a discussion with the "wild jail nikka", he was represented musically

If I had a discussion with the "ladies man" he was represented musically

The only ones who are represented musically at the FOREFRONT are the steppers/drug addicts/overly emotional "gangstas"

There is no balance to even things out..hip hop has been COMPLETELY consolidated

As I said previously:

Its so low vibration its crazy but its easier for people to descend as a group than ascend alone. Fear also has a huge part to do with it because the gangsta posturing is a front 9/10 by the people in the booth and 10/10 for the listeners because it represents a vent, a pressure release on their failings, real or imagined, and overall powerlessness.

Why do you think such rampant drug abuse and general buffoonery goes hand in hand with the lifestyle?

Its beyond corny and so far divorced from its original "we are the voice of the unheard" it was way back when because it serves many purposes, none of which are your friend but are of great profit to the system.

As I've been saying for a minute my people, they hollowed the culture out from within, weaponized it and unleashed it on a world that can't tell the difference between what hip hop was and what rap currently is. They're never going to let it shift, its simply too efficient at achieving their ends and the extended adolescence viewpoint it gives which automatically discounts experience as "an old head trying to kick knowledge" when thats exactly what the kids need because the guidance they're looking for isn't going to come from some barely coherent moron with tatts all over his face and a 9 in his waist, but like I said:

Its easier for people to descend as a group than ascend alone.

As I've matured I've come to see the trap that was set by the gangsta wave but also realize there are deeper reasons for its existence due to the collective unconscious needing a way to manifest. The new stuff is simply unlistenable if you're grown because a) it doesn't speak to you like that and b) you ain't doing the drugs you need be to connect to it.

That last part is absolutely immense. Consider the shift from the early days of fun and dancing to the drunk and blunted 24/7 era that came and how the music shifted with it to include more themes of paranoia, increased violence etc.. these substances fuel and then inspire in their listeners too.

The game really is deep if you can peep.

Put the old heads on some new music

A lot of people look at hip hop these days as just trap/drill which is disappointing because there’s so much out there for everyone to enjoy.

The underground has been killing it guys like

navy blue
K.A.AN
Kenny Mason
Armand hammer
Lukah
Nappy Nina

Just to name a few have been making great music for awhile

There’s plenty of mainstream guys that are great from Kendrick and Cole to drake and lil baby to Dababy and polo g to whoever there’s so many good mcs with different styles.

But it seems like people would rather shake their fist and scream back in my day instead of actually looking for good hip hop that’s why I question do people currently like hip hop.

If you don’t like one type of hip hop go to a different type it’s like how rock is if you don’t like punk then go listen to which type you like.

completely bored with modern gangsta rap, trap, thot, etc., but i still like the younger underground rappers. a lot of dark stuff. it takes way more work to be a hip hop fan today, but spotify makes it a little easier.

On topic tho, I still love hip-hop. But there isn't anything I've heard in the last 5 (10?) years that has made the hairs in my arms tingle as I reach for the rewind button...

That said, it still has moments for me. Kodak floated in the ZeZe track, I've loved a number of JCole verses, but not so much his actual projects...misc other newer songs/artists..

And sometimes eras collide a bit and I'm swanging this one heavy lately:

But a lot of my exposure to new sh*t is through the radio and they play a lot of trash ass music. So that leads to the thought process: new music is trash...when in reality, I'm just not really digging.

Then to add to it, as I've gotten older, I wrestle with content.....in both new and older music...so I say all of this to say, I love hip-hop.

But it's complicated.

Of course, even some of the new stuff. But the 90’s stuff is classic. Even the 80’s stuff. I’ve been listen to a lot of oldies and R&B as of lately.
