I think Americans are too used to at least feeling like they have a voice.

Authoritarianism will eventually come if we don't get rid of the anti democratic parts of our system like the Supreme Court, electoral college or federal courts that are staffed by unelected officials.

But I don't see it coming as communism, I see it coming as white fascism but then that fascism will collapse as Americans still want to be individuals and don't want to be dominated.

Interesting thread topic. Yes we do like the idea of feeling like we have a voice but support everything that contradicts that. If change will come it'll be from younger people and probably cause they would have to. Also excluding white nationalist, we have a two party system slowly merging to one affiliation which will be to the right. I think we are closer to some type of Authoritarianism rule than democratic socialist because of the amount of corporate influence with laws supporting their efforts.

White American will never be happy to have their tax dollars pay into social services that black and other minorities will use…so I don’t see socialism taking place in America.
Which is pretty much why the socialist movement was stamped out in the early 20th century and why unions were frowned upon in the south

Conservatives and liberals would rather burn down America and kill 100 million people than allow socialism to occur

In a sense, 100 million Americans over the next several decades will die due to poor medical access, under-education leading to worse life outcomes, unrestrained pollution by the engines of capitalism…

Democratic socialist i think would be ideal
I think that will only happen if union membership overtakes what it was in the 1950s.

Democratic socialism works when the electorate is used to exercising voting rights on a smaller level. If you feel like you have a voice where you work, you can feel like you have a voice in local elections and you'll see your interests represented at state and federal levels.

Unions represent the interests of the workers. And workers generally want good pay, time off, good infrastructure, child care and quality education. They also tend to support protectionism and tighter immigration laws so that they aren't displaced by workers who will work for less money and in unsafe settings.

The way things are set up now represent who has the power in American society. Not the workers, their bosses. They are perfectly fine with how things are now because this is probably the best time right now to be a millionaire(unless you care about not being hated).

I think if worker power increases, naturally to appeal to unions who can shut down the economy any time with strikes, political candidates will support more democratic socialist policies. I don't think it's a coincidence that the countries with highest union memberships tend to lean socialist. China and North Korea are not examples of communist or socialist countries because workers still don't have control of the economy. Career politicians do. Xi isn't also working as a metal worker or engineer. Kim Jong un isn't taking phone calls and writing emails to clients. They're full time politicians who legislate based off what will keep them in power and couldn't care less about working conditions. They are actively hostile to any sort of threats to state power.
