Doc Rivers is departing as head coach of the Milwaukee Bucks, team sources confirmed to The Athletic on Sunday.

Rivers, who signed a deal worth approximately $40 million combined when he was hired in January of 2024, has another season remaining on his contract. Per team sources, he will be paid out on that final season of the deal.

The Bucks and Rivers are in talks about a possible role within the organization, team sources say, but Rivers appears very interested in taking a break. The veteran head coach hinted at another role moving forward over the last week, and did so again after Sunday’s season finale in Philadelphia.

“I can tell you we’re all on the same page,” Rivers said about the plan for him moving forward that he has discussed with the organization. “We’ve talked about it, and we want it out pretty quick. I just want them to do it, it’s better. But I think you guys pretty much know.”

After starting this season with an 8-5 record, the Bucks fell apart as Giannis Antetokounmpo regularly struggled with injuries, missing 46 of the Bucks’ 82 games. They finished the season 11th in the Eastern Conference, 11 games behind the Miami Heat for the East’s final play-in spot.

In 2 1/2 seasons in Milwaukee, the Bucks compiled a 97-103 regular-season record under Rivers. In playoff series against the Indiana Pacers the last two seasons, the Bucks went 3-8 as injuries to Antetokounmpo and Damian Lillard severely limited the team’s playoff chances.

Meh, wasn't his fault (and I'm not even a Doc guy like that) but I'm sure he's happy he got the check and is outta there. Go relax and chill out Doc.

What could Doc have possibly done? This is a sinking ship

People are going to make him the fall guy when the roster construction isn't his own doing.
We cant ignore how we got here. Doc backdoored his way into this job as an "advisor" while Griffin was there. The team was jockeying for the top seed in the East at the time. They havent come close to that since. No pleas for him. And no pleas for Giannis.
