"life after death" inspired a generation of under-achieving rappers(like Juelz Santana) who then went on to inspire a generation of mediocrity.

i'll probably be tuned out by the time the next generation comes around.

a 4 mic or so quality album gets gassed up as goat, mainly due to sentimentalism & pity. then millions of rappers follow suit, not realizing its main ingredient to success.

If I ain't said Em is the GOAT (I didn't) or that BIG or Jay are over rated (I didn't) why are you bringing that nonsense up to me? :what:

Not the GOAT =/= over rated. BIG is a great MC but all that GOAT shyt started after he died. And his death made it virtually impossible to debate the point....which is what's happening in this thread.

Fred.

I understand your point fam. But I know you're old enough to remember that Big was the considered the nicest emcee in the game at the time. That's why he's when he was called the GOAT when he passed & there weren't too many people against it at the time. And if you consider Jay Z's success (and Big was looked at as better than him when they both were alive) you get a idea of how successful he would've been had he lived. Just like I said to @stomachlines look how much Jay "paid homage" to Big in stealing lines & verses & how others have done the same even in 2016.

yeah, i know :wow:

shyt, jay just "borrowed" from this album again a couple of years ago when he sampled "my downfall" for his song " jay z blue" for the magna carta holy grail album

I understand that him & Big were friends but at a certain point with is "borrowing" it gets :snoop:

LAD suffers from some of the same stuff that people try to clown Jadakiss albums for (Jada's albums are actually underrated imo). I wouldn't be mad if someone said LAD was a classic, and I'd be inclined to agree because there's so many great records on it, but the album is really all over the place in a bad way.

He wasn't considered the nicest dude out breh. That's partially my point.

There was never this universal consensus he was the best. The East couldn't even agree on that. Everyone from Wu to BCC to De La was dissing him.

So if his own city didn't agree....how is he the best out? How is he the GOAT?

People act like there wasn't a large sub-section of rap fans that seen BIG, Puff, and all that flossy player shyt as the worst shyt out.

The thing is, he died. And suddenly everyone that was dissing him, and criticizing him, couldn't any more. And he died at the height of his popularity, so he's forever at the height of his career. Which is why people will forever pay homage.

The same thing happened to Pac. People talk about "I wonder what Pac would be rapping about in 2016". Nothing. Who knows if he'd even have a career?

BIG could've fell off after a couple more albums. Which is what happens to 99% of rappers in existence. You can't look at how hot he was when he died, and apply that to his entire career. Or look at Jay's success, and say "that could've been BIG". It's not that simple.

ehh. there were people who f*cked with jay harder than big in '96 breh.

thing is, big was there already and jay was on the come-up.

THIS.

whats funny is, if biggie lived, he would've caught all sorts of criticism for LAD. similar to the flack nas was catching for IWW.

but because biggie unfortunately died right before the album, it was widely accepted as some goat chit. and all of the album's detractors stayed silent out of respect, it seemed.

The majority of people & outlets back then did consider him the nicest in the game fam. Of course there were some detractors; especially amongst his peers but to me it seemed more like being mad petty & jealousy because of how he blew up. To me it seemed the majority out weighed the detractors. And you have to look at Jay's success & even Puffy's success. @Rapmastermind has a informative thread about Big's plans & both Jay & Puff stole his ideas. That gives you a glimpse into what his future might've looked like had he lived
