my first post, in the thread for my ideas.
We shouldn't be lookin' for any other country to help us, yet. Really who are "us?"
The reason I usually bring up the fact we aren't a monolith is there isn't too much real unity, with blacks in America. The best I can think of is frats and sororities and that seems to be more about private economic empowerment.
I'm not goin' back to Africa. I always wonder why we think that's gonna work--starting all over in a foreign country--when we don't even, half way, have it together, here.
It's real complex issue and I don't wanna lecture anybody about something I'm still trying to learn, myself--I'll just answer your post.
No government power? That's not true. We are voters and when motivated, we will vote (see Obama '08, '12) and get involved. The only problem; we didn't hold Obama to real standards (lol @ the Obama effect) and deified him. Has he been terrible for black people? Not at all; he's done everything the black voter base asked of him; no drama and make us "look good." Unfortunately, anytime anyone dared held his feet to the fire (in the name of more substantive issues), like any politician should, they were called "haters" and "c00ns." Dr. West was doin'--rather you agree with him or not--what we should all been doin'--challenging the president to earn our vote.
My point; continue to be involved in the government that taxes us and puts a police presence in our neighborhood. And not to limit that involvement to national elections.
White people aren't our enemy. Our biggest enemy is capitalism (consumerism, precisely).
Our buying power is enough to run a small country, but, we don't understand how to spend our money (something I need to learn, better). And not a lot of us have generational wealth. I'm politically neutral, but, my biggest beef with republicans is this lie they tell of pulling themselves by their boot straps. Most of them come from generational wealth.
One reason I don't get on black entertainers much is; they are empowered by a system that doesn't allow them to "revolt."
When Warner and Universal are lining your pockets and people want you to "militant it" up, they miss the fact that; such-and-such is only that wealthy and influential because he/she empowers the system. The minute they revolt, the system takes that money and influence and it means nothing. Does it mean; keep selling out? No. But, I'm an adult and realize a lot of these dudes are in debt and got bills to pay. They can't just up and say "F my bosses" and the system that made them billionaires. It's a tricky situation.
Anything we do is gonna have to be baby steps. Our first move should be fixing our families and neighborhoods and then moving on to the next step.
It's such a big, complex issue...
