My girl (she's Ethiopian) has been telling me about this. She told me how bad it was between the to countries but I'm finally glad they've come to some peace.

She said there was a lot of lingering hatred among the people because it was passed down and the teenagers born in the US are in it and don't even know why they hate each other.

This can also be applied to Somalia, recently South Sudan and I also assume many other African countries with tribal/clan strifes. Parents polluting the minds of their kids and making them inherit their beef even when they’re in the west. Why would one leave their country because of tribal conflicts to then introduce their children to what ruined their country in the first place.

It’s great to see Ethiopia and Eritrea make a solid attempt to get past their conflicts and try their best to forget the past. Should be an example to many African nations :ehh:

Watch how saavy politicians leveraged the Gulf's finances and role for their own benefit. Meanwhile Somalia's sabrerattling and stunts vis-a-vis the UAE amounted to what benefit for the country exactly? :patrice:

Western journalists promoting zero sum political economics

She is right. Djibouti is a huge loser in all this. Not only will they have less Ethiopia port traffic, they will be forced to pay the equivalent of half their GDP to get out of their DP World concession.

I believe that in the long-term, if opening up more ports to Ethiopia develops their economy - Djibouti will be able to recoup the losses. We'll see

They're useless. Its one thing to remain neutral, which I get... the Qataris bankrolled Farmaajo and Somalia isn't going to ditch the Turks cause they're really the only partner that's done anything worth a damn in 25 years...

But there's no diplomatic savvy and everything has to be a damn provocation.

Half a billion :picard:

How have the Qataris reacted to Ethiopia and Eritrea restoring relations? The UAE is backing this because they want to divert some traffic away from Djibouti to Eritrea. I remember that qatar was accused of backing eritrean rebels.

Plausible. But Eritrea's isolation was a built-in advantage for them, which they're losing in real time. Just like Somalia, I dont think their brinksmanship vis-a-vis the UAE was well-advised (and was highly personal as well - had much more to do with fallout between the President and his former bagman, than any economic or national interest).

Theyve barely reacted. Though Qatar is winning the broader war in the court of public opinion and in diplomatic corridors in the West, theyre clearly losing in the HOA. The UAE has multiple interests here, Djibouti is part of it, but I also think theyre interested in investing in Ethiopia on its own merit. Generally, I dont see how a zero-sum game benefits Somalia, they gain a lot more from trying to take a piece of the pie (and capital) than they do otherwise.

As the dust cleared up from the Berbera port chaos, we still see the project continuing to move unabated. So what exactly did Somalia gain?
