Yes but of all the reasons the obvious one is that Eritrea no longer has to be in a defensive state ready for war since Ethiopia is vying for peace. This can end the conscription program which can stop the mass exodus of Eritreans and even bring them home to a country which can now focus on its development instead of military shyt.

Plus truth be told, the people on both sides been tired of this for a long time. They’ve had independence almost as long as their war with us lasted so it’s generations that need something new. Not to mention the families that have been separated ever since and the people which claim both sides. One way or another this needed to happen.

Yeah but what's in it for Ethiopia? :patrice:

They just made deals with Sudan, Djibouti and Somaliland (Berbera port). I don't think they really need Eritrea for sea access .:patrice:

Diversity is the spice of life.

Having multiple access roots opens up various regions of Ethiopia and prevents one country, or two, from dictating Ethiopia’s access to the global economy

:yeshrug: my bad. I always thought they were the same. Sorta like North and South Korea. Never learned the origins of their beef.

They are both multi ethnic. The dominant ethnic group in Eritrea is closely related to the ruling ethnic group of Ethiopia. They also have some other ethnic groups in common, like the Afar who live on both sides of the border.

But some super nationalistic Eritreans will tell you that they are very distinct from Ethiopians :russ:

It’s a country of 90+ million with a growing industrial sector and it looks to add customers for electric services once the Renaissance Dam is completed. Also, there’s no advantages gained from having a hostile relationship with any of our neighbors, Eritrea more than any other because of the deep shared history and culture between us. This allows Ethiopia to focus its efforts on other areas of development as well.

I still got my eye on him. This is such an Obama ass nikka that I gotta be suspicious. It’s still the same government that people were complaining about but with a younger face and more progressive policies in comparison to past figureheads. The jury still out for me.

At least I can finally go to my great grandparents village and find me a nice Eritrean wife....:noah:

I called it 6 months ago. They will use an obama oromo to quell protesters and he will use fake gestures.

His gestures not looking so fake though.

It's a smart move, but its a significant shift from the current policy of isolating Eritrea. Abiy seems to be a true reformist. :ehh:

He's also been trying to make peace with rebel groups, the opposition, the oromo and amhara protesters etc..

Like you, I was suspicious of this dude at first but now.. :patrice:

How far can he go before there is a backlash from the old guard tho? :francis:

Kinda but not really.

Eritrea and Ethiopia share some ethnic groups and languages, but the differences lie in political schisms mostly. Our origin is essentially the same, there is no Axumite Empire without Eritrea and there is no modern Ethiopia without Axum, however the paths of the two land masses ended up a little different. The land that is now Eritrea was an on again/off again part of Ethiopia for centuries, the bond was only broken when outside groups would take over the coast during times when Ethiopian governance was weak.

This experience gave Eritreans a perculiar difference from the rest of Ethiopia which when a nation was finally created from the former Italian colony there was something to bind everyone together. Essentially for an Eritrean everyone, including Ethiopians, were foreigners and invaders and they just want self determination for themselves. Whereas some Ethiopians, looking at the shared culture, looked at them as traitors and untrustworthy for turning their backs on them. The raw feelings of anger and hatred aren’t stronger than the deep love that’s shared which is why the fanfare has been so crazy on both sides.

I’m giving you a super basic definition. There’s a lot I’m leaving out and I’m saying that so neither side takes exception. It’s a deep, tragic, heartbreaking history between us. I think of it like brothers finally reuniting after years of legitimate estrangement. Its beautiful.

The old guard had to preserve itself somehow breh. It’s a small price to pay as long as the people aren’t hellbent on wholesale change of governance in the country.
