This move proves to me more than anything that Abiy is not window dressing but a personification of an internal coup in Ethiopia. The OPDO really does run the show in EPRDF and Ethiopia now. There is no way a TPLF stooge would sign off on this. Unlike for TPLF, the Eritrea conflict holds little personal or territorial value for Oromos, so the negative repercussions of a a reapprochement far exceed the positives.
The drivers of the internal coup and the rapid reforms were political instability and economic malaise, including much reduced foreign investment. Abiy seems to be slowly reversing this, particularly with Oromos but there remains heavy instability in the hinterlands. If he is to truly save his own party and the country from further upheaval, he will need to seriously address it. Nonetheless, he is definitely the boldest leader the region has seen in a very long time and it’s an exciting time with new possibilities that were unimaginable weeks ago.
