That whole "internships= job" thing is starting to become whack. Most of these companies that have internships just use people for free labor or underpay and under teach them.

How do you expect a person to work for an internship over the summer in another state for $10/hr:scust: then, expect him to pay for housing and his own food and trans

And don't even say "well get an internship that pays for all that" because most companies aint covering those expenses just for 3 months.

Then, those unpaid internships :scust:. We all know what kinda swindle that is

Are you a child? Seriously, dude.

that shyt doesn't matter at all. as long as you're in, you're in. that's why i don't even hate on white people who got put on. they used what they have to gain positioning. that's what they're SUPPOSE to do. fukk what's fair. you do what you can to move up and when you're in a position to help, you help who you want to help the way you can.

i know breh i know :obama:

I don't think labor market discrimination should be understated. It doesn't help that the article in trying to put a human face to the problem used the exemplar of one guy who may not have majored in an area that is generating employment. People will focus on his story but there are some experimental studies done on labor market discrimination using resumes showing differential rates of call backs. I even saw one on a higher education site showing how minorities are less likely to get the chance to talk to professors, department chairs in person when they apply to grad schools just based on their names. To understand the problem we need not compare the media studies major to a STEM major but people in the same area to see instances of discrimination. I don't think there are even that many STEM jobs relative to the population of college grads to explain why blacks find it tougher. The internship route might also get tricky because lawsuits are being filed challenging the practice and i think Conde Naste closed its program after being sued by interns.

But you expect to get full time work without showing you can do the work?

Yeah, but internships really only became a requirement 15 years ago. I talked to my older cousins who graduated from college back in the late 90s and they told me that internships were only for music industry and a couple of majors. Problem is, too many college grads and too many of them intern for cheap/ free, which makes employers all the more greedy.

I dare say that the era of looking for a job/career may be a thing of the past. Its entrepreneurship or death at this point.

STEM is too rigorous for majority of American students with the current secondary curriculum but an influx of overseas grads are going to drive wages down.

You're right. Coli members can hardly comprehend algebra word problems, let alone differential equations. That said, I am against immigration to the USA. It benefits the rich while further disenfranchising the poor and middle class. Black and white American engineering graduates suffer when tech companies import Asians with PhDs and pay them pennies on the dollar. The only people that get rich with that scheme are tech company's CEOs.

I've been on both sides as a student/intern and as someone managing intern programs.
Most students don't understand how unprepared they are for full time work.

Blame the workload on classes that don't belong on their major

Also, it is sad to see how American universities are still trapped in the 70s in terms of preparing kids for post-Recession economy. Even internships are hard to get nowadays. Some employers don't even consider an internship as much since damn near everyone is doing it.

Yup,all this STEM shyt is really benefiting the rich and driving the wages for Americans even further down the tubes. Plus, most people in America are not natural math and science wizards. Employers forget that we are human, or do people want more @Chris.B type people in IT? :scust:

I actually agree 100%.

There doesn't seem to be nearly enough emphasis on real world learning.

Every job is different so I don't overlook that. My particular career is one where class work is damn near not practical.

You not doing internship for the employer, you doing it for yourself. People don't realize how green they are, internship helps you develop.

We should all strive to do better in Math and Science as STEM is the future. Someone well versed in math can become a banker, engineer, trader, statistician, etc. These are all 100k+ jobs by virtue of the fact they drive profit-making industries and involve skills that take years to master. Everyone can write and bullshyt an essay. The days where that was a valuable skill are long over. Americans that want to succeed should focus on improving their math skill and going to business school imho.

Full time work in your major with no school work/project ain't that hard. Only thing you have to learn is balance your finances. Employment has ran its course and if your employer doesn't treat you as a human being, best believe that entrepreneurship is the way to go. Only so much disrespect you can tolerate before you walk out.

Too many people are getting their MBA and are over-qualified for jobs, and driving the value down at the same time. Like I said, Americans have to go back to entrepreneurship, not just high paying employees doing rigorous work for corporations, if they want to restore its first-world status. Colleges are scamming people left and right and soon gonna collapse like the real estate market back in 2007.
