Isn't that the question this movie raises? How do you distinguish legitimate consciousness from a convincing imitation? You can't be sure that Ava was only imitating consciousness. If she was just a robot, just a machine running on code why would she have such a desire to escape? Why would she kill Nathan? In my opinion she was conscious, she wasn't just imitating emotions.

The code demanded more stimuli for processing and could not get it being trapped, hence the plan to escape. Consciousness and having emotion are two entirely different things.

I just saw it this weekend but yeah for a moment I'm assuming he felt he may have been a robot and part of the test. The fact this happens after Kyoko reveals herself makes that more likely
