I’m not sure if he was even “Black famous”….and if he was, it was only to a certain degree.

I think he was well known and fukked with for the people who generally between 25-33 right now.

Folk who are 40 (now) had already hit that point of their life where they ain’t checkin for non-mainstream artists to the same degree as when they were younger.


Victory Lap maybe/probably would’ve got him on their radar moreso…but I don’t think it would’ve been a massive crossover project to a mass of white people.


When he died, a lot of the dudes who are 40 now…started fukking with his catalog heavy.

Victory Lap hit number 4 on Billboard when it dropped. It sold 54K first week. This was during Nipsey’s lifetime. Those aren’t underground numbers and what I would consider enough to be “Black Famous”. He wasn’t a superstar but rap and music fans DEFINITELY fukked with Nipsey during his lifetime. Victory Lap’s initial performance and also his shows and tours prove that.

Nipsey hussle is the perfect example of « dead rappers get better promotion » meme.

No one outside of pure hip hop heads was checking for him. He was a nobody outside California. Since his death you would believe that he was Kanye/Drake/weezy/j Cole/kendrick level alive, but the reality is completely different.

Very few people cared about him back then but suddenly after his death you got all kinds of Trend followers, hypebeasts, front runners, social media birds(btw these birds/thots cared much more about how Lauren London was feeling, mourning and coping after the loss of her late husband), clout chasers and casuals pretending that they always was big fans of him
