Also people talk about workers not reaping the benefit of productivity.... being that the same skill levels are needed to work at McDonalds today as they were 50 years ago, I'm gonna wager that the increases in productivity came from the technology they use and the logistical improvements to their supply chain. All of which were funded by shareholders and designed/executed by management + executives + consultants. A McDonalds worker today is not more productive because they are so much smarter or more skilled, its still a job that literally anybody could do. You can get a lot more done with a typewriter than a pen and paper, doesn't make you inherently more productive/valuable.

Well your "wager" was totally incorrect :dead:

Do you fellate the rich and powerful in real life or is this just an online persona that you try your best to keep up? Trying to connect the McDonalds worker to the overall increase in productivity and its relationship to wage stagnation is a nice trick friend, but it will not fly as a factual representation of the labour market. If the relationship between investment and productivity was so linear, then why was the last oil refinery in America built in the 1970's, despite Oil being one of the most heavily invested in industries?

Before you take a condescending tone with others, I suggest you thoroughly understand the relationships between labour, prices and investment, and see that it is anything but linear. Maybe if your vocabulary included words such as "Labour Intensive" or "Capital Intensive" you would get a grasp as to why different industries have different outcomes with regards to productivity levels historically and wages. Maybe.

I'm not sure how Mcdonald's works but usually a franchise owner sets the wages he wants to pay their employees. The corp office gets a large lump some up front and a monthly percentage of income for each store in order to use the trademark.

In theory, but the people at the top indirectly (or directly) influence what those workers will be paid based on how they incentivize individuals. If I had the time I'd break down how and provide you a link to a study. But even if that's the case, if the baseline salary were the equivalent to making 15 dollars in NYC, then there wouldn't be much that a store owner's discretion could do about it. Mind you, NYC is the most expensive place to live in the country, only other major metropolitan areas are comparable. So in somewhere like Alabama, the wages of the workers would probably be exactly the same.

In government jobs like the DOJ, they adjust one's salary based on where one is located. It's done with major consulting and law firms, heckeven construction workers, etc. It's called a COL adjustment. These NYC workers are basically asking for a cost of living adjustment and to be paid the equivalent to what the guy in Birmingham, Alabama is being paid at McDonalds which is something I don't find all that unreasonable. 15 dollars an hour in NYC is literally the equivalent to making 7.25 (minimum wage) in Alabama. You're a good cat, but I think you're missing that. So because these people aren't as skilled as I am they're not entitled to the same wage increases that every other worker in that city is entitled to....:why:

In government jobs like the DOJ, they adjust one's salary based on where one is located.

A federal worker is not making 3x what they make in Nebraska in NYC for the same job. Most national companies have a COL/geographical adjustment for pay in different regions for the same job, but nobody, not even the govt or the UAW has the gulf of adjustments these people are demanding.

I'm still hoping for some kind of explanation as to how you see McDonalds doing this and maintaining profitability + fiduciary obligations. On one hand you basically admit you don't know enough to lay out how or even if Mcdonalds could do this, but on the other hand you are certain that everyone who feels McDonalds can't do all these things is wrong... which is it friend :skip:

I agree with this in regards to NYC being the most expensive city in the country, therefore wages must be adjusted to reflect this. However, I once looked into working in the NYC market and skilled positions are paying $15 per hour, which require college education. This issue reaches far beyond a Mcdonalds and we cannot expect PRIVATE companies to do anything to change this without a vast overhaul of labor laws which I am assuming you are arguing for. Mcdonalds is about profit only and not about the well being of their employees. Times have changed in this country and there is no longer the help thy neighbor philosophy which helped companies like Ford become who they are. I hate to become political in here but the Republican party has done a great job of selling this so called American dream in which anything is possible and you have to pull yourself up by your boot straps. Until something is done to reverse this, people have to do what they can to afford to live in whatever area they call home. You can sit back and complain but the bills won't stop coming and their kids won't stop being hungry. We can fight day and night until labor laws are changed but until then people have to fight to make it in this society to survive. Many of us have worked our asses off to be able to be comfortable in life and not have to worry about rent, the power bill or where our next meal is coming from. I will say people like you are the reason things will change one day. Your passion on fighting for the injustice seems to be sincere, so please keep up the fight. I'm on your team.
