It Was Written is a classic record and is dope apart from a few missteps; Nas Is Coming, the "It's like I'm a gun" part at the beginning of I Gave You Power. It's very cinematic and although thematically different to Illmatic, it serves us with Nas' best flow and delivery ever. He is more polished here than Illmatic and you hear the growth and confidence.
Given a lot of the stories are fictitious and mafioso, I see where folks may have gripes but that doesn't deter away from the work of art it is. Nas and his peers were setting trends as young adults (22), writing way beyond previous generations had managed to. The smoothness of his effortless flows in songs like The Message, Watch Dem nikkaz, Take It In Blood and Live nikka Rap showcase why he is considered a G.O.A.T. His storytelling capabilities are unmatched here except by a few. The beats were dope (except for Nas Is Coming).
