That's literally what happened. Word of mouth via Game Pass is what blew the game up. The game appealing to a casual audience who otherwise didn't care for RPG's or turn based games is what made it what it is. There would be no casual audience without Game Pass. People don't spend 60 dollars on games out of curiosity anymore.

Microsoft can’t even get their own first party games proper promotion and hype, but they did it for a little third party indie game? E33 didn’t sell 7 million copies because gamepass users pushed it, it sold because it was a good game with good reviews.
