Jay pleaded for that album to be a classic. And yes there was a bunch of albums that year that didn't make a "mark". Jay's was one of those albums. It was looked at as a hot album. It was his debut album and it didn't make a mark critically or commercially brot. Illmatic did. Ready To Die did. OBFCL did. The Infamous did. 36 Chambers did. Doggystyle. The Chronic. The list goes on and on. That shyt was on the level of AZ's Doe or Die when it dropped. Dope album but wasn't considered a game changer.
A man i'm sick of you fake nikkas trying to intertwine east coast flops with monumental west coast classics.
Quit lying

infamous
illmatic
OB4Cl

were all on Doe or Die levels.

And they didnt move anything.

RTD
Chronic
Doggystyle
36 chambers should be separate from those failures.
Despite me loving INFAMOUS

1It wasnt commercially but it was critically. 2Not to mention it got bootlegged heavy.3 It made in undeniable impact on the rap game. Labeled classic off bat. Reasonable Doubt didnt critically or commercially. I don't understand how this is an argument cause it's not like it's a slight to Jay.
1. fukk the ratings of some asian whore in an east coast bias mag
2.Stop making excuses, bootlegging didnt begin or end with illmatc
3.It's impact is easily deniable, flopped at retail, meant nothing outside of queens projects

lol, Bait reply to try to turn this into a ''Nas vs Jay'' thread.

The illmatic situation is a lil different, The hype for Nas was there he was
being consider a golden child of hiphop, Due to heavy bootlegging Columbia Records
had to salvage what they had and put out illmatic as it is, illmattic was suppose to
have upwards to 14 -15 songs on it.
It's not different.
Nas flopped and bootlegging happens to everyone, not just artists you (and others) like to make excuses for.
His position with the general public didnt match the east coast hype machine,so he flopped and and had to change his whole style from queens street tough to Mafioso jiggy rapper to sale records.

He got a point,show some respect spliz:pachaha:

I look at that list and cant help but see it look as if you tried to just slide those albums in on some slick shyt,as if they was same level as Doggystyle,The Chronic....i dont think you was trying to,unlike some delusional posters would....,but from a west coast point of view i cant help but cringe:scust:.

Future compared Nas SECOND album single (If I ruled the world) to Jay Z first album.

That's not a fair comparison.

He should have compared Nas "1 Love" or "NY state of mind".

But him throwing out If I Ruled the world tells me Illmatic wasn't even on his radar cause like RD it took years for that album to go platinum too.
