A couple other things....

I'm :dead: at people using The Source 100 Albums Of All Time or whatever the fukk as proof "Reasonable Doubt" was classic at the time. Chill Rob G is on there. That's all I'm gonna say.

And people keep mentioning how big "Ain't No...." was....aight cool....but the song was one of the weakest on "RD". So right off the bat a semi-weak song was synonymous with Jay. That's one of the main reasons it was like pulling teeth to get people to listen to him. I know, because I initially brushed him off for the exact same reason.

And if you're telling me the other "RD" singles were given the same push as "Ain't No", you're a god damn liar. They wore that video and song out.

NY all day..Da Stead & BK..
Don't care what future says. He has trash taste in music just judging off the horrible mumble rap he puts out. fukk outta here :camby:
G he didn't even say the album was wack. He said it's a classic album but it wasn't poppin at the time of release. He wasn't lying at all.

This ain't about your opinion. It's about an overwhelming amount of people saying shyt was one way and you're arguing it was another way. That's it. It has nothing to do with me personally. If I came in a thread talking about "Doe Or Die" was the hot on a certain level because everyone I know had it....and a thread full of people from all over the U.S. told me "nah, shyt wasn't hot like that from any angle"....at some point I'm gonna have to reassess my view of reality. It don't mean I'm gonna suddenly think the album is wack....it means maybe how I received the album wasn't in line with reality at the time. That's it.

And I'm not comparing them. History compared them because they came out around the same time. None of these albums exist in a bubble, and Jay received very little attention due to who else was out at the time.

Fred.

you can use all the smilies you want, but so far we been stating opinions on the topic: was RD hot when it dropped....future stated his, i stated mine, they didnt agree, that's cool...the issue is you and others are trying to state yall opinions like they facts, and they not....when you wanna get to facts, lets see: around the time the album dropped, people knew about jay and RD, fact...it had a single on a popular movie's soundtrack, fact....he was getting talked about from other established artists, fact....had singles poppin before RD dropped (aint no nikka, dead pres, and can i live), and singles poppin after it dropped (knock the hustle, brooklyn's finest), fact.....had specials on mtv/bet, fact....received between 4-5 on a 5 grading scale, fact....you and others are trying to add shyt to the convo to prove yall 'right'.....the topic isnt if it was classic, was jay was the biggest out, if it was the best that year, etc...it was 'RD wasnt hot when it dropped'....

you are comparing them....cause you're comparing albums from artists that are established to a 'new' artist...so to compare them, you compare their debuts to his, not their 2nd and 3rd albums to his...what the fukk?...of course the established artist gonna get talked about more, people know that person more...

edit - also, like you said: yall experience =/= my reality...i'm not gonna change my opinion just to go with he crowd...for yall it might not have been hot and getting play like that, but it was getting play like that around my way....

It definitley wasnt as commercial as they come at the time,it was just commercial based on what people expected from Nas.....people who never heard Nas before It Was Written(majority of people) didnt see a problem with it....

this is true

illmatic spoke to the choir of nikkas who love all things boom bap:pachaha:

this is true too but let's not forget that NY Boom Bap is like the essence of the Golden Era of Hip Hop music

nikkas need to understand how many people dont love boom bap like that,

this may be true but saying you don't like boom bap is like saying you don't love hiphop. It's like the purest form of HipHop outside of Disco-Rap of the 70's early 80's

and most if brave enough to admit it will acknowledge they thought It Was Written is better, more nikkas coming out the closet every year to admit this..nikkas was so brainwashed they was scared for years they would lose "hiphop cred" by saying such a thing:mjlol:....anybody who had this opinion for at least 15 years or more can probaly cosign they was one of the few willing to say outloud It Was Written was better, but more come out now that it looks more safe....but most go along wih Illmatic as THE classic as told like sheep out of respect, and becuz thats the narrative...i dont disrespect it either,i just like to hold it in its proper place and context like it should be:manny:

IWW is sonically more modern sounding than Illmatic but make no mistake, the Illmatic influence is real

Ya'll see why a breh like Future is ahead of the game tho :manny:

He said in about a hundred interviews he study the game like its a class. He studied the Beatles to make his hooks. He studied Pac and Jay for his bars :manny:

This is his words not mine.

HENDRIX

Yea but there's studying and actually applying what you studied.

Most nikkas didn't even know wtf Chino XL was until Pac dissed him. He should've thanked Pac.

same with Jay to a lesser extent

the first time I heard of Jay Z was on the Makaveli intro

then later I found out Aint No was his song, I though it was Foxy's
