Illmatic was hot tho it went platinum 7.5 years later
Now we are getting into semantics.
BG is a completely different story. Ecsuse he wasn't on a label and didn't have videos on cable or songs on the radio outside of the South. I was as hardcore as you could be in 96/97 in the Bay and I didn't know who they were until I saw Ha on Rap City.
Nah. I already explained how this is bullshyt.
Fred.
None of this changes the fact Illmatic flopped and changed nothing in 1994.
Posting links of nikkas talking bout it years later doesnt change that
I was more talking about whether Das Efx was a major factor in 92. I think you could argue they were, depending on what we mean by a major factor. Not really. Imagine if Future said the same thing about "Dead Serious". The thread wouldn't exist because it wouldn't be a conversation.
Matter of fact, DAS EFX would actually be a better thread because everyone was jacking their style for a minute. Jay sold a similar amount but didn't influence anyone. Nas sold a similar amount and everyone from Above The Law to BONE has talked about how impactful "Illmatic" was. There's levels to this shyt.
Fred.
BG was unknown to a whole different level because he didn't have videos on cable. I don't remember them having ads in the Source or anything like that either.I get it but I mean from a regional perspective you could compare the importance/weight of Jay and BG. Both were very popular/successful and somewhat influential in their region, but kinda unknown outside of that
Yea I never said nobody knew who Jay was. I said he wasnt a big deal. He didn't make an impact.I was more talking about whether Das Efx was a major factor in 92. I think you could argue they were, depending on what we mean by a major factor.
I'm only in this thread for anyone saying NOBODY knew about Jay in 96, or he was irrelevant. Otherwise i agree with @spliz
I know :psalute:Yea I never said nobody knew who Jay was. I said he wasnt a big deal. He didn't make an impact.
Are you really arguing Nas wasn't heralded as the second coming and the album wasn't considered an instant classic/masterpiece amongst that community? Jay definitely did better commercially.
Nas wasn't immediately viewed like THAT and neither was his album which is why cats ain't flock to the stores to cop his shyt same as Jay/RD, I'm sayin your claims that heads felt that way about Nas/Illmatic but not Jay/Reasonable Doubt is somethin you know you can't prove.Kee reading the thread.Nas wasn't immediately viewed like THAT and neither was his album which is why cats ain't flock to the stores to cop his shyt same as Jay/RD, I'm sayin your claims that heads felt that way about Nas/Illmatic but not Jay/Reasonable Doubt is somethin you know you can't prove.
