I can agree with that. I was initally basing my post off a few post who was saying it was a classic when it dropped.

But im a be real, i just feel like if ur nose wasnt into hip heavy at the time, rd was under radar. Casuals aint really know jay until hard knock life outside of the east coast.

And are u from the carolinas breh? I ask cause i know their radio played more ny shyt at the time than other southern spots.

yea, my original post was going off what future said...it was others that started adding in shyt to try to prove some point....as for whether people thought it was classic or not, that's all individual, so i have no say on that....

that's where i disagree....his shyt was getting played on tv and radio, and he he had specials on mtv/bet, so how did people not know about him?...seriously, people acting like the nutty professor wasnt a big movie at the time, and that 'aint no nikka' wasnt one of the lead singles for said movie...that shyt got play everywhere...

yea, i'm from NC, but that's not an excuse why i heard him....we got music from all over the country at the time...if you were popping aka 'hot', you got play...and i'm not just talking about on the major radio stations...i'm talking about them all, including college stations, the stations that only play certain music at a certain time, etc....

He's got a point Jay was gonna throw in the towel because of that fact, but dame encouraged him to go on. If future's album dropped in the summer of 96 he would sell less than Seagram's 'Reality Check'
His plan was to retire from jump.

pleading for sales and pleading for classic are 2 different things...he pleaded for the album to have sold a lot, not for it to be classic...cause that's not something he, you, me, nor anyone else can decide for others....it's all opinion....some thought it was, some thought it wasnt...which ever side their opinion fall on is cool, cause it's all opinion...

also, using your list, some of those albums werent debut albums from those artist (the infamous, obfcl, the chronic), so they had more of a backing/following at the time they dropped than an artist with a debut...

not trying to change your mind, just asking for my own clarity: to you, for an album to make a mark, be considered 'hot' (as future said), it has to be a game changer?...
Mobb got zero benefit from Juvenile Hell dropping before Infamous. If anything it made it more difficult for them.

Why ny cats stay in they feelings jay z wasnt known till 98 hardknock life. Only a few people knew him when he did reasonable doubt. Especially the south and west didnt know him. Jay came after pac and big and reasonable became hot after jay z career took off.
I had Jay Z 1st album on a cassette dub from my homie cd. We was poor...:russ::mjcry:

Reasonable Doubt wasn't big when it was out. At all. Bone Thugs was even going stronger. Jay Z blew up after BIG died and those singles started catching fire. Just like that Master P and No Limit shyt spread out after Pac died. No one ever HEARD of Master P when Tupac was alive.
Master P was well known before PAC died.

I feel like people say this because of what Jay-Z ended up becoming. The bar changed when he became mainstream.

Nobody says "Nocturnal" wasn't hot when it dropped, or "Whut Thee Album" wasn't hot when it dropped, but I can guarantee RD was more popular than those albums.

To me, the album was hot because a lot of East Coast heads were bumping it and the videos got mad play on Rap City/Yo MTV Raps.

It didn't crossover to the mainstream, but I didn't think you had to do that to be hot.
Nocturnal and Whut are in no way comparable.

they got experience at making songs, the music biz, gained some fans, etc., but that's besides the point...the point was that was their debut album, and we are talking about jay's debut album...that's why i said it wasnt earnest for that cat to compare RD to infamous when talking about whether or not RD was 'hot' when it dropped....

I see your point. They were washed and had been dropped from their label. They had to start over.
