i see cats comparing rd to other artists debuts or other albums released at the time, but jayz didn't have the same buzz or push as them. plus a lot of ny artists were benefitting from the resurgence of ny hip hop around 93 after west coast had been running things with gangsta rap for a few years.
nas was buzzing off his work with main source and basically every top ny producer trying to get on his project. it could be argued nas was huge in kicking off the resurgence. he was like the bridge from the old ny hip hop scene to the new.
mobb deep didn't blow until their second album and a big part of that was due to nas. also all the ny super producers jumping on their project.
wu tang was grinding and created their own buzz off the unique sound, dope mc's, and super group pedigree. and their team had industry experience. every solo album from that squad ate even more cause of the group's initial success.
big had buzz cause of puffs networking and involvement on mary j's project. plus the big/mac promo that helped get big more buzz off the craig mac flava in ya ear single.

Illmatic isn't a classic because in an alternate reality it may not have been a classic. :prodigylol:Its loved by the same nikkas who loved it back then,backpackers and hiphop nerds....nikkas still aint bumpin Ilmatic like that....same choir,different generation.
It got the same rub RD did,nas was able to blow up after Illmatic,and tell everybody how great Illmatic was....doesnt matter who cosigned it,his album wouldnt be the first classic that underperformed and went on to be forgotten.
Why yall dont think his situation and Jays is similar dont seem right...if Nas doesnt go on to do anything relevant after Illmatic,if he gets dropped after Nastradamus even,Illmatic isnt looked at or talked about like it is today as some album that stopped time when it dropped

Alot of albums were,and dont get talked about now...why?because those nikkas fell off and didnt have the media dikkriding them along the way like Nas and Jay have.
But some nikkas aint need that
If nas and jay never blew,Illmatic wouldve been seen as a classic by backpackers thats rarely talked about,93 til infinity status,jays wouldnt have been called a classic at all.

As far as singles Dead Presidents/Ain't no was top 5 on the Rap charts and like 15-20 on the rnb/hiphop charts. And it sold gold, don't think All that I got nor Ice Cream did those numbers.

Reasonable Doubt was more successful and had hit singles so you hidin behind that "core community" term knowin you can't prove heads felt Illmatic more.
Jay wasn't indie.
Infamous was gold quick.
The editor in charge of the mics at the Source at the time Illmatic got 5 was a black man from Harlem.

Future don't know shyt, no more than what was told to him. How old is Future? 29 or 30? so what he was about 5 or 6 when Reasonable Doubt came out? So you really can't talk to someone operating on revisionist history versus someone age appropriate at the time of release.
