Nothing to see here folks. He's right in that it wasn't a huge deal at first. Jay brought a new style that a lot of people couldn't really relate to yet. Especially outside of NYC. I don't even pay attention to sales like some of you. Illmatic took 7 years to go platinum smh.

that line and every line jay has said in regards to RD was about SALES, nothing more/less....'RD, classic, shouldve went triple'......now, if yall trying to say it wasnt 'hot' cause it didnt sale like that, cool....but to act like it wasnt 'hot' cause people didnt know about it nor jay is not true....
sounds like he was saying it went over people's head to me

It wasnt hot when it dropped though, its what we been arguing about this whole thread....did you hear the other artist Future mentioned as who was hot at the time....you wanna tell me Jayz and RD was "hot" in comparison:mjlol:

again with the smilies lol.....like i said: i think yall just like using those.....anyway, yea i heard what he said...he compared a debut artist/album to established artists that already had albums to say the debut artist/album wasnt as hot/known as them....well no shyt lol...talk about stacking the deck to make a bullshyt point...compared to big, pac, cube, etc. and other artists like that at the time that already had albums out, he's right, jay wasnt as known/hot as them....but that doesnt mean jay wasnt hot/known at all....people knew about him and RD...

seriously, you/yall ignoring the fact he had a single on a popular's movie soundtrack? or that he had a single with a nas sample that was poppin?...or the song with mary j that was poppin?...how about the song with big that was poppin?...or the specials he had on mtv/bet?...yall realy acting like he was a nobody and just showed up with RD, when that aint the case.....

side note: since yall wanna put so much stock into what future said, how about the fact he thought 'if i ruled the world' was on illmatic?...yall just gonna ignore he said that just to go at jay huh? lol...

this is true

this is true too but let's not forget that NY Boom Bap is like the essence of the Golden Era of Hip Hop music

this may be true but saying you don't like boom bap is like saying you don't love hiphop. It's like the purest form of HipHop outside of Disco-Rap of the 70's early 80's

IWW is sonically more modern sounding than Illmatic but make no mistake, the Illmatic influence is real

You were on a roll when you were saying i was right:pachaha:

Well have to disagree on whether boom bap is the essence or "purest form of hiphop" since the disco era....i definitley dont see it as the heart and soul of hiphop:banderas:...and the sound mostly does nothing for me,not in my top 3 when it comes to production styles.

If i close my eyes and point to that chart, most likely im pointing at a east coast nikka,i never doubted it had a major impact locally at the time of its release:manny:

another thing: please stop saying he was riding the coattails of foxy with the 'aint no nikka' single...her album came out after RD....not only that, jay wrote songs for her and appeared on her album lol....why would she do that for someone that's not 'hot' like yall claiming....

Jay had his chance to shine with Hawaiin Sophie:troll:

I already bought that up and have been talking about Illmatic lacking impact too for the last 10 pages:dahell:

bigger question is why are you acting like a debut artist couldnt do numbers in hiphop?they can if they make a impact,Jay just didnt mame a impact like that breh....all that shyt you talkin about wit specials, songs with Biggie make him not making a impact even worse, cuz he had a better push then some nikkas who sold more or as much as him:mjlol:

That means nikkas heard em,and still aint wanna hear him...and yes this place was built on smilies along with quality posting.

How many of y'all was old enough and listening to HipHop when that album dropped?

If you was into HipHop you would remember that RD was not nearly as hot and selling like the rest of the more popular rap artist and groups when it dropped.

I remember clear as day. That album came and went with the quickness. Nobody anticipated Jay Z first album back then at all.

His singles was dope but that's where it stopped for most people.

Only people that wasn't into rap or wasn't born at that time would try to argue otherwise.

i havent read that shyt, that was yall convo...i've only came back in this thread when i was quoted lol...

i'm not acting like a debut artist cant do numbers....just pointing out normally a debut artist isnt gonna do numbers like an established artists, so that shouldnt be held against that debut artist....

as for that impact shyt: that's different than whether an artist was hot or not...future said hot...that's what i stated my opinion on....yall added in impact, mark, classic, etc., which is a different convo....

ok, that's cool...

Yeah the fact that this thread is so long just shows nikkas tryna discredit future by any means even tho he 100% right.
