I don't wanna get too wrapped up in hype but honestly if Guru hadn't passed (RIP) I don't know that I would've ever guessed this was old vocals. I think there are 2 big reasons for this.

1. Preem always has been excellent at remixes. I know everyone puts Pete Rock up there as the GOAT remixer, but Preem has always been right up there with him. So if anyone can make acapella verses fit well into a beat it's Preem. Not to mention Preem knows Guru's voice/flow/cadence better than anyone, and can build the perfect beat for each set of vocals.

2. Guru as an emcee always had moments where he left the pocket either on purpose or by accident. It was an endearing quality so I don't mean that as a doss. But he was never a Jadakiss type rapper that always stayed in the groove. Sometimes Guru would slow down or speed up, and I think the moments on this album where Guru goes slightly off-beat just remind me that this is something that Guru often did anyways.

Like I said, I just skimmed this once because I wanna wait for the explicit version. But what I really like off one listen is that it feels like a celebration. I love how many people from the extended Gang Starr family that Preem was able to get involved with this...from old comrades like Group Home and Jeru, to mainstays like Fame, Danze, Shug, and Bump Knuckles, to more recent Gang Starr family like Royce. Speaking of Royce, that line about Guru's ashes being on the boards during the album recording got me choked up.
:wow:

First listen, no tomatoes por favor

01. Intro is nice, live vocals over some of their greatest instrumentals 7/10
02. Lights out, Guru's verse stands out, MOP do their thing as well, beat is ganggang 7/10
03. Bad news, my fav from the 2 singles 8/10
04. Hit man, beat is kinda generic to me, Q-Tip doesn't really work for me here 05/10
05. What's real, Royce steals the show as somewhat expected, starting to sound a bit like Guru is the featured artist 8/10
06. Interlude, N/A
07. From a distance, decent album cut 07/10
08. Family and loyalty, personally didn't love the Cole feature but i get it, 7/10
09. Get together, like the sound, ''ladies track'' somewhat, neyo's hook acceptable 6/10
10. Another interlude, N/A
11. So many rappers, nothing special 6/10
12. Business or Art, don't love the Snoop sample since im so used to hear it so much already on gangstarr material, not the biggest talib fan either 6/10
13. Bring it back here, 1 minute freestyle 6/10
14. Last interlude, Big Shug ''singing''
15. Take flight, okeish like the whole album 7/10
16. Bless the mic, strong closer, 8/10

Album is just over half an hour, guess Premier did what he could, don't think this will change their legacy in anyway but it was good to hear ''new Guru'' nonetheless

7/10 RIP GURU
