I remember once for a art class I was taking in junior college we took to the train to Chicago to the art museum. We stopped briefly in Gary and just from the little bit I saw I felt bad for folks living there. My hometown getting the same way though, majority black and we don't have any money so everything just decays.

The city of 119,125 had a record 110 killings in 1993, translating into a murder rate of 91 per 100,000 residents. That's well above the homicide rate in Washington, D.C., which has led the nation in recent years.

Chicago, which last year saw 852 killings, had a murder rate of 30.6 per 100,000 people. Within the city, only the Harrison Police District on the West Side, where 90 people were slain through November, had a higher murder rate than Gary.
