I feel that the question is moot because you are comparing apples to oranges.
I feel the Gretzky and Jordan are the GOAT in their respective sports though.

Hockey and basketball have a different length regular season and different number of games played in a season. Stats on paper don't line up. You have goals and assists in hockey and in basketball, you have your free throw 1 point goals, and 2 point field goals and 3-pointers. Defensive stats are recorded differently too. Gretzky went pro straight from junior hockey. Jordan went to college after high school and then went pro.
If you watched them play in their prime, each was a game changer in their sport.

Jordan label is a cash cow with Nike. Gretzky put his name on a lot of things that sold well.
Both have not been as successful in their respective sports in management roles of a professional team.

Why wasn't he even the best person on his own team in 2 of the Finals WINS?

Fun Fact: Michael Jordan has the highest regular season PER in NBA history......

Highest in the regular season, in HISTORY.... Higher than ANYONE....

/thread

Name the two times Gretzky wasn't the best player on his own team in finals wins. Give me the seasons and you will see how dumb this is. You don't know hockey well and are just making yourself look really dumb to anyone with hockey knowledge on this board.

Since you love PER here's something for you. I'm not saying Wilt is better then Jordan but answer this.

Wilt has the two highest regular season per's in nba history. So does that mean Wilt was better then Jordan in his prime ever was, twice during the regular season?

Jordans scoring average / PER both INCREASED in the playoffs (even though they were already the best all time in the reg season), Gretzkys scoring average took a dive

Jordan averaged 3 more points, on 2 more shots and 4 more minutes per game, all while shooting a lower percentage? Quite the argument you've got going

The hockey hate on here is funny. On one hand, people complain about people tearing down basketball to big up hockey. Then, they do it the opposite way and see nothing wrong?

I'm a huge fan of both. Nice to see both sports doing well. NHL got a big tv contract in Canada. They messed up by putting a few teams in dumb areas, but other then that they are strong overall. People in Canada love hockey and it does good in the northern United States. Hockey is also liked in a few European countries and Russia.

You have to understand, nikkas around my age, Michael Jordan was the father some of these nikkas never had. Lived vicariously through this nikka's Gatorage and Nike commercials on some I want to be like Mike shyt while the grown ups was in the living room, sitting on crates, playing bid whist and spades and looking like :drunk: all night long in the 80's and 90's. Their imaginary daddy was on NBA on NBC and Marv Albert said YES! and FACIAL! all the damn time to the fly shyt MJ did on the court.

All bullshyt aside, how can you objectively look at their statistics and not clearly see that Gretsky was better. Wayne Gretsky has the 11 of the 12 highest season assist totals ever and 4 of the top 10 goals in a season ever and 9 of the top 11 highest point totals in a season.

Most 100-point seasons: 15

Not only has Gretzky lapped the field in this category (Lemieux is next with 10; no one else has more than eight), in all but one of those seasons he put up at least 120 points. In 11 of those seasons he'd have reached 100 points without scoring a goal.

Most consecutive MVP awards: 8

In the early years of the NHL, New York Rangers center Frank Boucher won the Lady Byng Trophy so often (seven times in eight years) they finally gave it to him and Lady Byng donated a new one. The NHL could have done the same thing with Gretzky and the Hart Trophy; he won it in each of his first eight seasons before Lemieux broke the streak in 1987-88. Jagr, Esposito and Howe are the only other players to win the Hart as many as four straight times. Since Gretzky's streak ended, only Ovechkin and Dominik Hasek have won as many as two in a row.

We can kill the charades now and bow down to the greatness of The Great One :blessed:

So we acting like fuhrt wasn't a hall of fame goalie

Kurri, Anderson, coffee aren't in the hof as well.

Oilers ended the islanders dynasty when the islanders players were in their prime. It wasn't Jordan beating a flabby magic led Lakers team

Oh, one more thing bro....

When Gretzky did get traded, his old team still won a Championship without him....

Furthest Scottie got without Jordan was to the 2nd round.... Then of course soon as Jordan came back, they won 3 more.

The more and more I dig, the more and more this comparison becomes lopsided... It's good to show the public the truth.:ahh:

So, let me get this straight....if you're black and liked Jordan as a kid, that means you grew up fatherless? :dead:Black people hate each other and themselves. Was kobe fatherless?

The self-hate on this forum is ridiculous. So many "Jordan was a father to these fatherless nikkas" posts. Yet, let colin cowherd say Goodell is a dad to fatherless black players and all hell breaks loose.

Makes sense the ones claiming gretzky as more dominant than jordan are the ones talking about black males being fatherless. Racc00ny c00ns. I question the upbringing of any black male with in-depth knowledge of the history of hockey.

TBH I would probably give the edge to Gretzky as well, but this is a basketball forum...you really expect everyone to be objective here? :comeon:

That could be a valid argument....

But Gretzky is 4-2 in the finals.... He only won Playoff MVP 2 times out of 6!

Hockey has had several people win MVP on the LOSING team in the Finals (unlike NBA, where it only happened ONCE in history, Jerry West)

Bottom line, if Gretzky was as good as Jordan, he should have 6 playoff MVPs for the 6 Finals he appeared in, EVEN IN THE 2 LOSSES....

He only has 2... Jordan has 6.... He is not on Jordan's level... period.

Gretz' 2 finals losses came against 1 dynasty in his first Finals (the powerhouse Islanders, which he beat the following year), and his last Finals where his Kings faced Patrick Roy and the Kings answered with... Kelly Hrudey. BIG advantage to Montreal. Not to mention the Kings could have upset Montreal if not for a pivotal penalty against Marty Mcsorley in game 3 (I believe) that turned that series around.

As for the Finals MVP, keep in mind that the Conn Smythe goes to the MVP of the playoffs, not just the Finals. And when you're on a team with other first ballot HOFers like Messier, Curry, and Coffey, & Fuhr you're simply not going to win every MVP award. Jordan only played with 1 future HOF the majority of his career, and you log way more minutes in hoops than in hockey per game.

And I'm not caping for Gretz, my GOAT hockey player is easily Orr (arguably the LT of hockey in how he revlutionized the game from a defensive position). Just wanted to clear a few things up.
