Outside of the Jazzmatazz albums, Guru’s solo albums were mid.

Dont get me started on that album he did with Solar.

The fucc was he thinkin doin that???

He could have called T-Pain and hopped on the “Can u Believe it” remix
Gang Starr albums WERE solo albums :russ:. Just like Nas and Hit Boy albums. Do you not view every common album he's done with Kanye, Dilla, No ID, and Pete Rock as solo albums?

That would be cheating to use the Gang Starr although they were just Guru rappin…

Jazzmatazz 3 was meh. Im
ashamed to even own that album
That was probably the best one of the series!!! Are you serious? He was doing collabs with Dilla before anyone outside of the true hip hop heads knew who he was. When that album was released, people were coming up to me that listened to nothing but No Limit/Cash Money telling me how much theyloved it. Song for song, none of the first 2 Jazzmatazz albums (especially the 4th) can match the 3rd in terms of production or overall songs. If you want, we can do a song for song debate in this thread.

Guru kinda slept on, I've watched some of these young dudes react to joints like Moment of Truth, Mass Appeal etc. and they're blown away they haven't heard of him or never heard him in top MC discussions. He was dropping gems in those bars. And I would absolutely consider Gang Starr to be Guru projects. That's like if Nas and Hit Boy gave themselves a title and no one considered them solo Nas albums :mjlol:

I honestly Thought that Gully was talking about his solo albums outside of Gang Starr…

If you’re gonna go solo, at least make sure that your solo albums are up to par.

Guru’s solo albums were meh but they had some moments

no, the first 2 were dope. I have them all. I regret not taking them to the Gang Starr show and having Guru sign them b ecause I thought it was too much being that I had all of the Gang Starr albums up to that point.

IDK how they'd do it, but governments around the world have to figure out how to disable cameras on phones, disable mics and ring lights, something. Just do whatever it takes to stop these dumb nikkas from having a platform to spew idiotic takes that even they don't believe. Tired of this shyt.
These dumb ass bloggers are chasing clout over credibility. Broke bum ass nikkas starving for social media pennies.

Disgusting shyt.

Guru is not an overall better emcee than Nas. Guru is better at being philosophical though. He pretty much raps in parables. But Nas is more versatile with his flows subject matter. Guru is only coming with that one monotone flow.

Ehhhh....

This is an odd comparison because Nas is light years ahead of Guru at rapping but Guru had the benefit of 90% of the time working with one of the best producers in history.

You very rarely hear people (I mean our age) quote Guru bars, it's more the whole package of him saying whatever (not wack, but also nothing mind blowing most of the time) and Primo beats.

So even if I could agree with this statement, it's only partially due to Guru. If it was Gangstarr vs Nas that would make a hell of a lot more sense, because a decent chunk of that package is Premier.

Fred.

I hate the fact that this thread is made because inevitably, one rapper is going to get downplayed or criticized to boost up the other.

Nas is my GOAT, so I can't place anyone over him. But Guru is arguably the most deserving of being in the elite conversation out of those who aren't normally in it. His versatility in subject matter, technical skills, ability to adjust with the times (his style is timeless while simultaneously sounding up to date with whatever era of Gang Starr you're talking about) and consistency make him an all-around talent. I think people overlook him because of the fact that he just so happened to be in a group with one of the GOAT producers, and his monotone voice make it so that you're not always paying attention to what he's saying. He was never animated or aggressive, but lyrically, he was one of the most underrated.

If you go back as early as Step in the Arena, he was rapping rapping. His bars were like complete sentences while still having a great flow. He never sacrificed the musicality for technicality, and he could simplify his style or go more complex depending on the topic. I never liked the idea of people thinking he was just the guy rapping over Premier's beats and he didn't have that much to say lyrically. He was a lot better than he gets credit for.
